Well Len, waterstart or uphaul, you might as well invest the two bucks for a pool noodle and decide for yourself.

For me this is only true when the wind is far from enough to plane. In these cases, I'm not even able to keep my 9.0 sail out of the water in lulls.

If there is enough wind to plane, waterstarting is always easier than uphauling for me, even with the 9.0 (I'm 220#). I'll uphaul only if the water is quite cold, or if I need to get going quickly and everything is prealigned. This takes more energy, but it can be faster than slowly rotating the rig in position.
