The sharks have been there all summer. More people are out on the water now, fishing, boating, sightseeing, etc, and more people crawling around mono maui, so there are more observers than at any other time of the year.
The sharks have plenty to eat so we will probably be safe enough.
The media sharks are now circling the lighthouse, looking for a good shark bite - er, sound bite to scare all the tourists one more time, and just in time for the last big holiday weekend of the summer. Maybe Evans will get some more face time from all the activity.
Police boat patrols, spotter planes.....
The big question is..... will they again over-react and close the beaches to protect us from the "dangerous surf" and ourselves???
BTW, there are now year-round seal colonies on Point Gammon(near Kalmus), Nantucket, Martha's Vineyard and the Elizabeth Islands, where an 18-ft Great White was stuck in a lagoon for 2 weeks in Sept. '04.
Where there are seals, there are great whites. just be glad they have plenty of food to eat!

Nonsense! Killing off the top level predators almost NEVER has the intended consequence.
We have abused the oceans long enough. Respect them, and live with your odds.

There is an excellent book on how the predators effect things 'Where the Wild Things Were' Life, Death and Ecological Wreckage in a Land of Vanishing Predators' by William Stolzenburg, 2008. Well worth reading and well written.

Cheers to a more learned perspective. I'm so sick of all the blathering idiots that open up their mouths and spew utter nonsense. Worst is the local TV. They mention, "watch out for those dangerous rip currents." Rarely, will they discuss how to avoid drowning from one. Meanwhile, lots of morons continue to die off from their own ignorance about them anyway.
Had all too numerous discussions about cold water, sharks, etc concerning windsurfing with the sheeple on the beach. Sad to hear the same old crap every time. I can waste my time explaining the facts and techniques about dealing with the surf til I'm blue in the face. Most can't fathom what I'm talking about. Now, I just smile and try to get away from them all.
