You should definitely try surfing.
Florida is a good place to learn.
Buy a big board.....BIC is a good starter.

Ask some of the more experienced surfers in the parking lot where to go......don't be afraid to approach them.....maybe join a forum like surfline.

For cry-st sake, he's over 60 years old. Don't send him to those dark places like surfer forums and never to a gang of longhaired "uts" hanging out in a parking lot.

But seriously, get the Bic and paddle out to the secret bowl. All who make it are generally welcomed!

Get cheeky with a gang of surfers and get your adz handed to ya. They'll smash your car, etc as an after thought. Tread lightly in the surf community. Surfing is easier in only one regard: cost of entry. Everyo ther aspect is harder. Paddling out vs the rides, yuck. That's after you master the right paddling trim for any given wave or paddling out conditions. I could go on. Sales people that twist the truth end up being unremarkable.

Vero Beach is 1.25 hours S of CC/Cocoa Beach. Where he sails is out in the middle of nowhere, Wabasso is a small town N of Vero. Some oyster shells if you step off the board hard BTW....
