I've heard the southern-most tip of Cape May can be fun, easy waves on West/NorthWest wind. It would be basically sideshore.
Otherwise, I don't know any other wave sailing spots for W/NW.
The Barnegat Bay works pretty much anywhere on the barrier island launches- LBI, Seaside, Lavallette.

It's not South Jersey, but I've been sailing Ocean Gate in NW conditions, including Friday & Saturday after Thanksgiving (very windy).
Not wave conditions, of course, but the conditions are at least as good as on the barrier island because the wind funnels down the Toms River, and I think it might be slightly less gusty than on the other side (although W directions introduce lots of gustiness, no matter where you go) -- and it's probably closer for you. |

Where do you launch from in Ocean Gate?

I sail from Newport Ave, which runs N/S at the eastern end of Ocean Gate. There's a place to park & a sandy launch site. I usually rig on the boardwalk, unless there are pedestrians out, in which case I rig on the sand.
The water is deep, so in contrast to Seaside and other bay locations, it's water start only when you wipe, unless you jibe close to shore. On a NW wind, it seems to blow a lot harder in the middle third of the river, and if you sail too far north, you pick up a wind shadow from the N bank, so have to slog back to the wind line. Conditions are great on a NE wind, and you don't have to worry (as is the case in Lavallette) if the wind goes E, as sometimes happens.
In a S wind, just head down to Allen Road, which is 5 min away on the bay, directly across from the Marina. In my opinion, the wind and swell are better on that side. |
