what i don't understand is if he was an "expert" kitesurfer, why would he put himself in a situation so risky? experts don't fall in the water so how could he have been attacked???

Ducati, Are you kidding? Experts fall in all the time. Part of being an expert is pushing limits and that so often results in falling in the water. Besides, I don't think standing on a kite board or a sailboard is any protection from a shark let alone a group of sharks. Last week's news had aerial footage of hundreds of sharks densely packed in close to a FL beach.
Sad news and our best to his friends and families. RC |

oh i hear ya about pushin the limits, however, if i saw a flock of sharks, i sure as hell wouldn't be pushin the limits!!! in fact, i wouldn't be out in the water period!!!
sound like a darwin award-winner to me...

This happened only 20 miles south of where I was windsurfing that same day, and is pretty alarming. It's going to be really weird the next time I get in the water. Sure as hell don't want to suffer a breakdown on the outside, or get stuck out on a sinker in dying winds if it means a long swim back through the shark-infested waters. |

Gives us all some pause. Sad for his family and friends. Self rescue techniques are much more paddle board oriented for we windsurfers. With larger wave or cross venue boards that handle ever more wind, if something should break down, there's another benefit of "going big."
Staying with a larger board certainly helps me sail away from more common dangers like getting mauled by the next large set, etc. Your Cross 106 may become an even more oft-used board, right James? _________________ www.aerotechsails.com
