mrgybe doesn't seem to realize that if people say that you are saying insensitive and offensive things--you are. Mrgybe doesn't seem to realize that posting things like the "Obama cell phones" video is, at best, insensitive. Mrgybe doesn't seem to realize that saying nothing in the face of bigoted comments by your political allies is, in fact, bigoted. If you are not part of the solution, you are part of the problem.

There is both deep bigotry and political calculation involved in the GOP's scapegoating of immigrants. Lying down with those dogs gives you fleas. We can see you scratching.

Please, the appropriate sarcastic reference is Mangler. Mrgybe--should be easy for you to remember, you've mangled the facts and the atmosphere.

But best of all is your claim to be accomplished and your desperate efforts to insult those that don't meet your definition of accomplishment. You've sold a product that the society and economy has become addicted to, helped lie about the impacts of that product, and you think you're accomplished? Gasoline sells itself. You guys at Exxon just play politics.

Perhaps you can remind me where I claimed to be special? I have been accused of hating immigrants and being a racist by the silly, angry man in Berkeley who routinely invents things to bolster his ridiculous positions. I chose to come to this country and to jump through all the hoops it takes over many years to become a citizen. My clownish accuser inherited what I had to expend considerable effort to obtain. If you really concentrate you may be able to detect the difference.

It's a shell game, Mr. G. Maybe you don't realize it.....ETC, ETC, ETC

Thank you for the 2010 income tax rates and for the extracts from Mother Jones.......always a reliable source. I am very familiar with the top marginal rates of taxation. The top rate for 2013 (the subject of the Huff Post article) will be 39.6%. In addition, many deductions phase out at that income level or are eliminated by AMT. Additionally, those at that income level will pay 20% on long term capital gains............short term gains will be taxed at the 39.6%. Not finished yet..........there will be an additional 3.8% investment income tax which kicks in at significantly lower income levels ($200-250K)

Thought this would be helpful to you since your knowledge seems superficial and out of date. BTW, while I would love to enjoy the comradeship that would come with "you and I' sharing the same tax bracket.........I suspect that won't be possible.

Ummm.... just read this post and your previous post on the topic... the tone you use says, "Oh, poor me."

Anyway, you just explained why you think you're special.

Thanks.

If you understand all that, then why the indignant outrage at those tax levels? Years ago, the rates were much higher for the wealthy, in the 80% range or higher. Today, the wealthy pay peanuts. Relatively speaking.

Unless my eyes deceive me, the chart says "Source: IRS" at the bottom. But I'm sure you'll point out that the IRS is not to be trusted.

I see that you're a divider... I could have guessed that. And I think we're in different tax brackets anyway.

Reading for content is so difficult. Here's where mrgybe claimed to be so special, one of many times:

Quote:
why is that the least accomplished among us are so willing to characterize others as "dumb"?

I said, very clearly, that mrgybe's posting of the Obama phone video was insensitive, at best, and that he is a fellow traveler with bigots. To remain silent while supporting politicians like Jeff Sessions is to be part of the problem. Not really that hard to understand.

On the Obama phone debate:

Quote:
As Washington has debated the sequester and the fake crisis of federal spending, some leading conservatives have revived a familiar meme about an old program called Lifeline, which is a longstanding federal subsidy created to make phone service accessible to people who are elderly, very low-income or living in rural areas. Like the furor surrounding Obamacare in 2009, the ongoing stir over “Obama phones,” as the program has been dubbed, is instructive. It illustrates just how bizarre the right can make reality look when it uses race to demonize government.

Conservatives such as talk show host Rush Limbaugh and Rep. Tim Griffin (R-Ark.) have cast the nearly 30-year-old Lifeline program as wasteful and targeted it for elimination. In a video on his congressional page, Griffin spends more than three minutes bashing what he calls the government’s “unchecked spending.” The ad rests on the image of a black man screaming, “Get your free government phone today!” from a car.

ObamaphoneThumb_190x378.jpgThe recent attack is actually nearly four years in the making. Early in Obama’s first term conservatives began characterizing the program as “phone stamps” and calling Lifeline pre-paid cellular units “Obama phones.” Trading on the welfare queen stereotype, they’ve also accused black people in low-income communities of voting for the president strictly because his administration doled out free cell phones.

As the narrative goes, the federal government is using taxpayers’ (translation: white people’s) hard-earned money to maintain an alleged welfare state and support the extravagant lifestyles of poor black folks in places like Cleveland, where video of an African-American woman singing the program’s praises went viral last year.

The resulting debate has finally put the program at risk: Some Democratic lawmakers have buckled under Republican pressure and agreed to make cuts.

FCC commissioner Mignon Clyburn, an Obama appointee, attempted to “set the record straight”] about Lifeline at a Consumer Federation of America assembly last month. “Without this program, 15 million low-income families would literally be choosing between feeding their children or going without a dial tone that potentially could save their lives and put them on a better economic path,” she said. But Clyburn’s fighting against years of powerful myth-making.

“The point of government assistance ought to be to remove people from it,” Limbaugh declared on his radio show last September. “But with the Democrat [sic] Party and Obama, the objective [of the Lifeline program] is to increase the number of people, and they use you,” he said, alluding to taxpayers.

Of course, the truth is much more nuanced.

The Truth About Lifeline

In 1985, President Ronald Reagan, the patron saint of the tea party, and his Republican-led FCC started Lifeline. The goal was straightforward: To make basic telephone service accessible to the vast majority of people living in the United States. Underpinning that goal was the fundamental idea that in 20th century having a telephone wasn’t a luxury but a necessity.

Lifeline was also simple in practice. If you couldn’t afford phone service—which back then meant a landline—you’d fill out an application. If you were approved, the phone company in your area would provide service at a discount and it would receive a federal subsidy to help make up the difference.

In 1996, a Democratic-led Congress made two key revisions to the Telecommunications Act in keeping with the FCC’s overall mission to provide universal telephone service. First, in a nod to the growing use of hand-held cell phones (rather than “car phones”), and the eventual decline of landlines, the law described “universal service” as something that would evolve. Between 1997 and 2007, the number of wireless subscribers in the United States grew from from 47 million to more than 243 million.

Second, Congress began requiring every company offering telephone service across state lines to contribute a portion of their annual profits to a newly established Universal Service Fund. Contributions to the fund would help underwrite telephone costs for low-income households.

At the time the Tea Party, one of mrgybe's darlings, elected to use the Obama phone video, there was an active debate within the GOP as to whether to use insensitive symbols like the infamous Willie Hornton campaign. To profess ignorance of both the debate and the insensitivity of the images is to undermine mrgybe's claims of accomplishment, infallibility, and perhaps even competence. But that really doesn't surprise me, coming from a man who has supported the elevation of the truly unaccomplished (e.g. Michelle Bachman) into the complicated world of government.

mrgybe, I see that you are up on the latest income tax increases recently agreed to by Congress and signed into law by President Obama. I have to think, based on your commentary, they have hit close to home by raising your tax responsibility into the future. No matter really, I'm sure that you can afford it. In the big picture, contrary to Bard's past claims about rich folks, I don't see you leaving the US any time soon because you're being taxed to death.

Didn't he just brag about his immigrant status?

He said: "I chose to come to this country and to jump through all the hoops it takes over many years to become a citizen."

He's proud to be here and grateful that he can stay. Despite his complaints, he loves the services those taxes buy him.

Do you imagine he knew that there was a progressive tax system when he immigrated?

That's why he's here -- the Land of Milk and Honey, all provided by the government. Now that he's jumped through those hoops and worked for the good life, he wants NOBODY else to share in the generous "socialist" benefits that allowed him to start.

Classic => "I got mine, but you can't have yours."

Mikey would be proud..... (but he can't read my posts, of course). Wink

I just thought he might be exhibit A in why the immigration standards should be raised. Keep the riff raff out.
