This warm, tropical deluge rain today is certainly going to help. Snow pack will really diminish fast in the next couple weeks on Mt. Hood, this will reduce the really cold water intake for the central corridor. All we need now is a solid week of 80+ air temps out east and it be shorty season for sure. |

guys in shorties? what are you nuts?
do we want a hypothermia death?
like it or not it will happen if this nonsense continues!
sorry to be so upset! know you mean no harm!
it is no fun losing friends on the mtn or on the water! Accidents happen as we know..losses are painful. BUT we do NOT need a funeral brought on by such stupidity!!!!!!! |

water temp is roughly 55 right now. That means if you are stuck out there 4mm to 5mm or more!
I know many are in shorter sleeves and 3! Not smart if you get in trouble and NOT specified in this weather!
Safety first! Stay alive! |

Hi Bill,
I'm so glad you brought this up..... you're so right, not such a great idea to go out in the shorty right now. I saw someone over this past weekend at Roosevelt in a shorty. Not really smart.
Just you wait, Bill, water temp will rise really fast if we see the desert warm up.... hopefully by mid-June? Probably closer to July, but we all just need to wait and see, good buddy. You best be patient like everyone else.
Take care, be safe. |

The same thing applies to sailing in winds of 60 mph sans helmet, IMO.
The first dude I see in a shorty each spring is 230 pounds of exothermic stainless steel. He overheats in any full suit once the air + water temp tops 100 by much. The only time he's gotten chilly was when he swam ashore alone at Port Kelly, a mile downriver, in mossy boulders requiring a submerged walk of shame, in a saturated bag dry suit, way after dark, in January.

Looks like the desert will be warming into the mid to upper 70's starting Sat. So that should help. Bring on the sun power!! |

Don't mean to change the subject from OP, but helmets did get mentioned here.
In 25+ years of Gorge windsurfing, the only trip to the hospital injury I ever had was head injury while wearing a helmet. Fact, in that case, the helmet contributed to my injury.
Had a close encounter last Friday at Rufus that made me question helmet use. Kiter kook performing hail Mary pass at kite launch came down out of the sky to visit me.... it was a really, really close and friendly visit. I was starboard and downwind.... didn't much matter, kiter kook made a bad choice and there he was coming at me like a heat seeking missle.
Might have been one of those rare moments when a helmet might actually be useful? Then again.... if kiter kook saw that I was wearing a helmet, he might not have put as much effort into avoiding a collision? I dunno the answer, but if kiter kook did land on my head, wouldn't it be more likely that I would go down with a neck injury?
So, why isn't everybody wearing neck protection?

There are some kiters who have beat downs coming. I almost handed one down last summer, but the guy was such a puny hipster, he "yes, Sir'd" me into submission.
They're quick to act a fool, but sh@% themselves when confronted! |

More effective to treat a kiter to a beer when they do good... just make sure they have no more than 1 beer. Studies show that rewarding people for good behavior works better than punishing them for bad behavior.
Interesting read about risk homeostasis theory here...
