I am traveling to the Gorge in August, I am considering checking out the coast scene. Does anybody have any opinions or advice?

August is good. Florence, Newport, Road's End, and Manzanita (Usually a bit too on-shore at Manzo., but almost always windy and fun anyway) If you kite, or have larger gear the North Coast is great--Fort Stevens to Sunset Beach.

Yes: Go. Wind or no wind, it's the most beautiful and most hands-on coast in the country. Almost every inch is accessible by law and in reality, and most inches are gorgeous and different from each other. Sailing there is a bonus. And don't overlook Clatskenie/Jones Beach on the Columbia 30 miles inland, which can blow very hard and very steadily for 5-10 days on end in mid-August while the Gorge bakes in dead air.

On the South coast I would recommend going to Floras Lake in Langois, OR. The only thing that seperates this lake from the ocean is a sand dune. It is about 15 miles south of Bandon. It is great for beginners and advanced alike.
