LeeD-Kailua to Diamond Head? What type of gear and how long did that take. Normally at Kailua you are sailing towards the Kaneohe Marine Base, going to DH is the opposite direction. You must of had to bear up wind fairly seriously just to clear Lanakai and Waimanalo. Even rounding the south end of the island is still a ways from DH. So what were you sailing?

This crossing is a test of endurance.
It is one long reach with best wind 22 mph from 270 deg. on slalom equipment.
You can see on these video samples how this cruise may look like.

This trip is not easy but average windsurfer can do it.
Organizing would be difficult, can't arrange the wind on far side of Bay.
Sail first from Coyote 4 miles to channel markers 5 & 6 than you can decide if you want to go three times as far when white caps are all the way. I will try to post more on the subject soon.

Gonna have to schedule it on short notice for a day with forecast for strong wind all afternoon.

That can be hard to come by this time of year. Cool

Nice classic pics!
I'm against most crossings and long distance sailing nowadaze, as I said.
Kailua to Kahala, close to Browns, done on a normal direction trade, so as you said, it's an upwind beat all the way till you get to Roy's, around HaunamiBay or so's, then it's easier with the wind in your back. Did that with Kenny, a local fireman, my g/f, and Bobby, the Makapuu lifeguard who lived next door to me at Kahala.
I've done the Paia (BuddestCem, Whidden's House) to Hookipa and then down to Kanaha, and the best direction for me was the upwind leg to Hookipa, with my g/f Cydnie. For her too, but we both can windsurf.
My only 3 sessions ever at Hookipa was from Whidden's house, on a Haut Chop, as I've had over 10 of those and ordered over 50 for SausalitoSailboards and later, Windsports.
Since I'm a little older now, and more mortal, I see the danger in long distance windsurfing that most of you choose to ignore. Breakdowns are huge problems, especially with all this carbon equipement, lightweight boards, and monofilm sails.
Not to mention the occasional body part injurys, making for a long and arduous day.

LeeD,

Look at the fun you had....taking up the challenge and meeting it. Would you deny that to all others?

Without taking a few risks in life, life tends to lose its fun.

Certainly a pertinent point....
OTOH...previous experience....
I had surfed for 24 years, a 4A competitor for over 3, so can handle in surf.
I've scuba'ed for 3 years, the first surveyor to chart Asilomar to Lighthouse.
I had raced motocross and roadracing for over 8 years combined.
I've been a mickeymouser and McGiver type since 6.
I had my required 6 jumps in the Army (Wings), and 3 private jumps.
I was a competitive waterski jumper.
You know the risks involved in those sports.
Most people have done maybe two of the above, and might not be as prepared as I was for breakdowns and overnights.
I also rescued over 14 people at Crissy between years '85 thru '92, and only SteveYong can top me there.
And broken 6 masts, 2 booms, some bases, 6 snapped boards, 2 pulled mastbases, and several finbox failures there. NEVER getting rescued.

Both of course.
I"m saying, with typical windsurfing experience, you are NOT prepared to handle a breakdown while in the middle of the bay, on a windy day, without boats or rescue nearby.
Are you?
