Hey, I think I saw this guy, no really. I was out a TI and I saw something big surface with these same markings. I thought it was a sea lion but the coloring was wrong and it didn't dive like a sea lion or bob its head up. Just kinda floated there at the surface.
Wikapedia says only five unprovoked attacks on humans in the last 600 years. nice odds

I was up by the bridge Saturday and a shark breached the water 30 feet off to my right. Probably 4 - 6 feet total, was very cool.
Have seen sturgeon multiple times and wasn't a sturgeon for sure first time in 12 years I have seen anything but a leopard shark.
There were also a lot of porpoises hunting at the time. |

Last year, I was sailing at the N tower at Crissy and saw a small White Shark. It surfaced (just enough for a fin to break the water) only a few feet from me, went under, and resurfaced before skittering off. I skittered back to Crissy...went home googled "Great White Sharks San Francisco Bay" just to confirm my sighting. One of the google results was video footage of a large Great White filmed between T.I. and the Richmond Bridge (closer to the Richmond Bridge) with commentary by a marine biologist.
So, maybe you saw one too.
Pretty cool way to improve your jibbing skills.

Scuba diving down at Pt. Lobos (Monterey) a few year back I saw a LARGE shark in the kelp/low light. I don't know if it was a six gill or a Thresher. Both are rare to the area, but it had a VERY obvious long upper caudal fin (Great Whites have symetrical caudal fins). I saw from the middle of the back to the tail and it that was over 8' long......
We decided to call an end to the dive (not much air left anyway)..... |

Statistically there are more people killed annually by coconuts falling out of trees and hitting them on the head than by sharks. or for that matter driving on freeways. sort of puts being in the water in perspective. but there is indeed something primeval and very scary about a large fish rising out of the depths and taking a chunk out of your body. Saw a big fin rise out of the sea at Drakes Estero while SUPing there a while back, dead sea lion on beach as we hightailed it out of there...respect for the landlord is good but under the bridge, inside the bay? shark o meter goes way down... |

Another reason not to wear shorts over your wetsuit.
When the coconut falls you need to be aerodynamically prepared to dash.... |
