Anybody got a weed report for San Luis from September?
It was pretty thick last time I was down there towards the begginning
of August but the water was low then to.

Humbolt and the lost coast are better for weed. |

Was out there this weekend, wind sucked but the water level was good (222+).
The weeds were still a factor but not too ugly. Don't leave home without your weed fin.
Two weeks ago, the water level was lower (219-220) and the weeds were in charge. We had to cut two channels through the weeds so that we could sail. The first few runs were painful but after we got the channels cut, we had a lot of fun.
Good luck, I wish that I could get out there. |

I hear that if you launch on the south side and sail into the boat/jetski side of the forebay that weeds are not an issue. True or no?
Does the main reservoir have enough water? I'm surprised more folks
don't sail there. |

You need high wind from the normal direction for enough wind to get past the power line islands and land shadow or you need a North to North East direction. Sometimes the boating section will blow on North to North East direction and the normal section won't have much.
Also they used to cut the weed later in the season but I was told they
weren't doing that this year do to budjet constraints
I have never seen anybody on the upper lake though people have told me they have done it.
They say there are big waves there and you used to have to carry and emergency kit with flares etc.. |

I've sailed on the main reservoir many times. It has great swell for bump and jump sailing and no weeds to worry about. There is a small wind shadow right at the launch (at the boat ramp) so sometimes you have to swim your gear out about 50 meters to get to the windline.
When the wind is up, boats are banned from the main reservoir, so you don't have to worry about any boat traffic. |

It's the southeastern boat ramp (Basalt?).
The safety kit was required because the rangers were concerned that inexperienced sailors would get blown into the rocky dam area in a hi-wind/wavy day which would be not-so-good since there are also supposedly rattlesnakes in the rocks . Not sure if the kit is still required. |
