Actually golf is a good compliment to windsurfing. 9 holes in the morning followed by an afternoon session is a great way to spend the day.

Ya buddy!

Think of WS and golf as Surf and Turf!

I went from WS for 25 Years to golf for 7 and now both for the rest of my days. Most stupid thing I ever did was step away from WS. For all of you who windsurf and don't workout, DON'T STOP WINDSURFING!

Apparently SUP is supposed to be a great workout especially for the abs.

I have done it a few times and it was a pretty good workout without feeling like a strenuous ordeal.

I would imagine that WS is even better.

Have any of you lost weight doing WS regularly?

Ya I SUP too now. Flat water/lake stuff so pretty low impact. I agree with swchandler. Windsurfing is an incidental workout. That's what I love about it. Does it help you lose weight? Hell ya. Anything you do like that is going to speed up your metabolism a bit. It's alot better for you than chasing a golf ball around the course although there is alot of walking involved. Especially if you can't keep it in the fairway!
All I know is when I started golfing and stopped sailing I weighed 180lbs. 7 years or so later, 215lbs. Now I'm back down to 180. It was still a struggle at first and I'm still not back to where I was but I will get there.

I like the fact that you are getting a workout without it being a typical gym workout. Similar to tennis.

I have been windsurfing since 1981 (I think), so 29 years.

I don't Golf anymore, there's just no adrenaline in it for me,
maybe I can get back to it when I'm too decrepit to Windsurf,
but I'll probably just head straight for a dirt nap at that point.

I'm wishing you much success in "standing up on the board",
with the right board, that should be a lot less difficult.

How long have you been WSing? Do you still play golf?

I will be happy to stand up on the board!

I am going Sunday for the first time in about 25 years!

Golf is definitely not an adrenaline rush that is for sure.
Almost like meditation.

I give you credit though.

Few can actually give up the game completely.

What are you really trying to say?

That if you are trying new stuff and falling in the water a lot and getting thrashed around in big waves, windsurfing can be a pretty good cardio workout.

Or if you're sailing in waves or in an aggressive manner in swell of any size without falling.

Falling in adds more cardio workout, not less, I fall a lot as most freestylers do whether on waves or not there us always a new limit to your skills to be pushed....agreed that the day you first plane in the straps will be life changing and the beginning of a beautiful addiction. The great thing about SD waters is that you can get a SUP and never be skunked. Light wind freestyle with a big board is a great way to stay fit as well as learn/improve your sail handling and balance skills
Enjoy!

How long did it take you to be able to WS in the waves?

To me that seems like a near impossible feat!

Only for the young and fit I am sure!

Fit, yes; young, no.

And I find bobbing in the water infinitely more relaxing than sailing. I have to drop in occasionally, and welcome an occasional crash, to get my breath back on the best days.
