How long have you been WSing? Do you still play golf?

I will be happy to stand up on the board!

I am going Sunday for the first time in about 25 years!

Have any of you lost weight doing WS regularly?

Only because I have a long drive home and must take a pass on the customary post-session beer(s).

I suspect that at a beginner level as I am, the degree of effort is greater than for someone with skills: walks of shame upwind, swimming frantically after the board as it runs away on the current, repeated uphaul failures in chop, ...

As part of a comprehensive and ongoing diet and exercise program, a day of WS is probably a better workout than a couple of hours at the gym. After a weekend of it, I need to take a day off for body repair before hitting the gym again.

Is windsurfing strenuous? Maybe, until you get things under control. While some muscle development is needed to handle things, particularly pushing the envelope in our time on the water, or really excelling in what you're doing, windsurfing isn't exercise like a hard physical cardiovascular workout. I like to think windsurfing is more anaerobic in nature. Most of what you do is felt later.

Golf and windsurfing in the same sentence is strange enough but golfer and windsurfer is some sort of Jeckle and Hyde thing - not natural!

I went from WS for 25 Years to golf for 7 and now both for the rest of my days. Most stupid thing I ever did was step away from WS. For all of you who windsurf and don't workout, DON'T STOP WINDSURFING!

Apparently SUP is supposed to be a great workout especially for the abs.

I have done it a few times and it was a pretty good workout without feeling like a strenuous ordeal.

I would imagine that WS is even better.

Ya I SUP too now. Flat water/lake stuff so pretty low impact. I agree with swchandler. Windsurfing is an incidental workout. That's what I love about it. Does it help you lose weight? Hell ya. Anything you do like that is going to speed up your metabolism a bit. It's alot better for you than chasing a golf ball around the course although there is alot of walking involved. Especially if you can't keep it in the fairway!
All I know is when I started golfing and stopped sailing I weighed 180lbs. 7 years or so later, 215lbs. Now I'm back down to 180. It was still a struggle at first and I'm still not back to where I was but I will get there.

I have been windsurfing since 1981 (I think), so 29 years.

I don't Golf anymore, there's just no adrenaline in it for me,
maybe I can get back to it when I'm too decrepit to Windsurf,
but I'll probably just head straight for a dirt nap at that point.

I'm wishing you much success in "standing up on the board",
with the right board, that should be a lot less difficult.

Nope. I eat a few thousand extra calories on big days to fuel the fires and make sure I don't lose any weight. Just as with anything from watching soccer on TV to playing professional soccer, it's all a matter of calories in vs calories out. Aggressive WSing can burn thousands of calories a day, and 3,500 of them = one pound.

Actually golf is a good compliment to windsurfing. 9 holes in the morning followed by an afternoon session is a great way to spend the day.
