Joe Scarborough Stunned By Report On Twitter’s ‘Preferential Treatment’ of Trump: ‘Kept Using Twitter to Accuse Me of Murder!’

Quote:

Morning Joe host Joe Scarborough was stunned and angered by a report showing “preferential treatment” for then-President Donald Trump by Twitter, which allowed Trump to “accuse me of murder” without consequence.

A deep dive by The Washington Post‘s Cat Zakrzewski, Cristiano Lima, and Drew Harwell details the contents of a 122-page memo from the January 6 Committee staff that wasn’t included in their final report and which covered the role of social media companies and platforms in the attack.

On Wednesday morning’s edition of MSNBC’s Morning Joe, Zakrzewski joined Scarborough and co-host Mika Brzezinski to discuss the report, which triggered memories of Trump’s attacks in both Joe and Mika:

MIKA BRZEZINSKI: Explain, first of all, what are some of the things that were avoided in the final report?

CAT ZAKRZEWSKI: Well, one of the things that the report focused on was how the tech companies actually gave former President Trump special treatment, especially Twitter. Former employees testified to the committee that he really did not have to play by Twitter’s rules, and they couldn’t even use the internal content moderation tools, that they used to monitor other accounts, to track his tweets. There was also a lot of new detail about just the general lack of preparation within the tech companies for the events of January 6. Former tech employees testified to the committee that they warned senior executives, especially at Facebook and Twitter, that more had to be done to stop coded calls to violence, to stop the Stop the Steal movement. And those actions ultimately weren’t taken.

JOE SCARBOROUGH: You know, I’m so glad you brought up the preferential treatment that they gave Donald Trump, because we’ve been hearing, of course, from from the current owner of Twitter and all these other people about how poor Donald Trump was so victimized and and people supporting Donald Trump were victimized, we had to deal with Twitter because Donald Trump kept using Twitter to.

MIKA BRZEZINSKI: As a weapon.

JOE SCARBOROUGH: Accuse me of murder. And when we talked to them, we said that anybody else in the world saying this would have their accounts taken down, and they had no answer! And it was very clear even then they were giving him preferential treatment and it continued all the way through January the 6th! How significant was that? Twitter’s inability to hold Donald Trump to the same standard they held everybody else to? How important was that to Donald Trump in fomenting this riot?

CAT ZAKRZEWSKI: Well, so the January 6 committee staffers concluded in their report that Donald Trump’s tweet on December 19th, when he said “be there be wild” in reference to January 6 was actually a transformative moment across the Internet. So not only did it rile people up on Twitter, it really had effects on other platforms. For instance, the messaging app Discord. Hours after that tweet went out, had to take down a server where people were discussing bringing firearms to Washington. And so what this report really showed was how these social networks can act as a megaphone for these extreme views and help amplify them.

Trump Responds to Paul Pelosi Attack Video

Quote:
Pelosi, the 82-year-old husband of former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, was attacked in the couple's San Francisco home in late October by suspect David DePape. Armed with a hammer, the home invader left the elderly businessman severely injured and in need of surgery for a fractured skull. DePape's comments indicated at the time that he had been targeting Nancy Pelosi, who was in Washington, D.C., at the time.

In the wake of the assault, the reaction amongst right-wing figures was swift, with many prominent politicians and pundits mocking the Pelosi family over the incident. Others, including Twitter CEO Elon Musk, amplified unfounded conspiracy theories that suggested that the attack was the result of a romantic entanglement between Pelosi and DePape.

more examples how twitter removed tweets of liberals at the pedophile presidents request, and how twitter would not remove pedophile presidents violating tweets and changed the rules for him.

Why the hearing on Twitter, Hunter Biden backfired on Republicans

Quote:
Republicans and their allies had looked forward to Wednesday’s House Oversight Committee hearing for quite a while. At long last, GOP lawmakers would pull back the curtain on rascally Democrats conspiring with equally rascally Twitter employees to suppress stories about Hunter Biden’s laptop, squelch conservative criticisms, and silence voices on the right.

It was, Republicans assumed, going to be awesome.

Even before the hearing began, the Biden White House marveled, not only at the odd timing of the Oversight Committee’s gathering — the day after the State of the Union, GOP lawmakers probably should’ve at least pretended to take an interest in actual governing — but also at the subject matter. White House spokesperson Ian Sams said the hearing would inevitably be “a bizarre political stunt.”

If anything, he understated matters. NBC News reported Wednesday on key elements of the hearing actually backfiring on the Republicans who organized it.

The House Republicans’ hearing on Twitter’s “role in suppressing the Biden laptop story” took some unexpected twists Wednesday — including one witness testifying that the White House had requested the platform remove a Chrissy Teigen tweet insulting then-President Donald Trump.

Remember, the whole point of the hearing was to explore the extent to which Democrats pressured Twitter to suppress content from conservatives. It was against this backdrop on Wednesday that Democratic Rep. Gerry Connolly of Virginia asked Anika Collier Navaroli, a former member of Twitter’s content moderation team, about this September 2019 tweet from Teigen, a prominent model and television host, criticizing Donald Trump.

“The White House almost immediately thereafter contacted Twitter to demand the tweet be taken down. Is that accurate?” Connolly asked.

“I do remember hearing we’d received a request from the White House to make sure we evaluated this tweet, and they wanted it to come down because it was a derogatory statement directed at the president,” Navaroli said.

The tweet was not taken down, but the relevant detail was the revelation that the Republican White House tried to squelch criticism of the then-president.

What’s more, this was not the only new detail to emerge Wednesday that undermined the point of the hearing:

In response to questioning from Democratic Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez of New York, former Twitter employees acknowledged that Trump published racist content that ran afoul of the company’s standards and policies, so Twitter altered its standards and policies to accommodate the Republican’s offensive content.
Former Twitter employees confirmed that the FBI did not direct the social media company to block a New York Post article about Hunter Biden’s laptop, despite Republican claims to the contrary. James Baker, Twitter’s former deputy general counsel, said, “I was not aware of and certainly did not engage in any conspiracy” with government or campaign officials to suppress the story. “Moreover, I’m aware of no unlawful collusion with or direction from any government agency or political campaign on how Twitter should have handled the Hunter Biden laptop situation,” Baker added.
The witnesses testified that Twitter could’ve done more to prevent the Jan. 6 attack, but executives made a conscious decision not to.
The Biden campaign did ask Twitter to remove “non-consensual nude photos” of Hunter Biden from the platform, which Republican Rep. Byron Donalds of Florida found scandalous for reasons I still don’t understand.
Republicans had to be reminded of what the First Amendment means and how it applies to private companies.
Hundreds of thousands of counterfeit Twitter accounts set up to advance Russian propaganda and disinformation remain active on the platform.
After the proceedings concluded, Trump turned to his rival social media platform to celebrate. “Congratulations to Congressmen James Comer, Clay Higgins, Pat Fallon, and all of the Great Republican Patriots on the House Oversight Committee,” the former president wrote. “What an important and incredible job you are doing. ... Hope the LameStream Media is covering this historic event!”

Either the Republican was watching something else, or he didn’t understand what he’d seen. This hearing — months in the making — did real damage to his and his party’s cause. GOP members had plenty of time to get ready for this “historic event,” but they nevertheless showed up unprepared and were caught flat-footed when the hearing produced the opposite of the intended evidence.

The question isn't why the hearing backfired; the question is why Republicans didn't see this coming.

Toward the end of the hearing, Ocasio-Cortez argued that partisan operatives were effectively “weaponizing the use of this committee.” It was tough to disagree: House Republicans held an oversight hearing, intending to prove government abuses. They sort of succeeded — by highlighting abuses that made Republicans look worse, not better.

Pro-Moscow voices tried to steer Ohio train disaster debate

Quote:

WASHINGTON (AP) — Soon after a train derailed and spilled toxic chemicals in Ohio last month, anonymous pro-Russian accounts started spreading misleading claims and anti-American propaganda about it on Twitter, using Elon Musk's new verification system to expand their reach while creating the illusion of credibility.

The accounts, which parroted Kremlin talking points on myriad topics, claimed without evidence that authorities in Ohio were lying about the true impact of the chemical spill. The accounts spread fearmongering posts that preyed on legitimate concerns about pollution and health effects and compared the response to the derailment with America's support for Ukraine following its invasion by Russia.

Some of the claims pushed by the pro-Russian accounts were verifiably false, such as the suggestion that the news media had covered up the disaster or that environmental scientists traveling to the site had been killed in a plane crash. But most were more speculative, seemingly designed to stoke fear or distrust. Examples include unverified maps showing widespread pollution, posts predicting an increase in fatal cancers and others about unconfirmed mass animal die-offs.

FILE - This photo taken with a drone shows portions of a Norfolk Southern freight train that derailed Feb. 3, in East Palestine, Ohio, are still on fire on Feb. 4, 2023. The major freight railroads announced a number of steps Wednesday, March 8, 2023, that they are taking to improve safety in the wake of last month’s fiery Ohio derailment, but it’s not clear if their actions will be enough to satisfy regulators and members of Congress who are pushing for changes. (AP Photo/Gene J. Puskar, File)

“Biden offers food, water, medicine, shelter, payouts of pension and social services to Ukraine! Ohio first! Offer and deliver to Ohio!” posted one of the pro-Moscow accounts, which boasts 25,000 followers and features an anonymous location and a profile photo of a dog. Twitter awarded the account a blue check mark in January.

Regularly spewing anti-US propaganda, the accounts show how easily authoritarian states and Americans willing to spread their propaganda can exploitsocial mediaplatforms like Twitter in an effort to steer domestic discourse.

The accounts were identified by Reset, a London-based nonprofit that studies social media's impact on democracy, and shared with The Associated Press. Felix Kartte, a senior advisor at Reset, said the report's findings indicate Twitter is allowing Russia to use its platform like a bullhorn.

"With no one at home in Twitter’s product safety department, Russia will continue to meddle in US elections and in democracies around the world,” Kartte said.

Twitter did not respond to messages seeking comment for this story.

The 38-car derailment near East Palestine, Ohio, released toxic chemicals into the atmosphere, leading to a nationaldebate over rail safety and environmental regulations while raising fears of poisoned drinking water and air.

The disaster was a major topic on social media, with millions of mentions on platforms such as Facebook and Twitter, according to an analysis by San Francisco-based media intelligence firm Zignal Labs, which conducted a study on behalf of the AP.

At first, the derailment received little attention online but mentions grew steadily, peaking two weeks after the incident, Zignal found, a time lag that gave pro-Russia voices time to try to shape the conversation.

The accounts identified by Reset's researchers received an extra boost from Twitter itself, in the form of a blue check mark. Before Musk purchased Twitter last year, it's check marks denoted accounts run by verified users, often public figures, celebrities or journalists. It was seen as a mark of authenticity on a platform known for bots and spam accounts.

Musk ended that system and replaced it with Twitter Blue, which is given to users who pay $8 per month and supply a phone number. Twitter Blue users agree not to engage in deception and are required to post a profile picture and name. But there's no rule that they use their own.

Under the program, Twitter Blue users can write and send longer tweets and videos. Their replies are also given higher priority on other posts.

The AP reached out to several of the accounts listed in Reset’s report. In response, one of the accounts sent a two-word message before blocking the AP reporter on Twitter: “Shut up.”

While researchers spotted clues suggesting some of the accounts are linked to coordinated efforts by Russian disinformation agencies, others were Americans, showing the Kremlin doesn't always have to pay to get its message out.

One account, known as Truth Puke, is connected to a website of the same name geared toward conservatives in the United States. Truth Puke regularly reposts Russian state media; RT, formerly known as Russia Today, is one of its favorite groups to repost, Reset found. One video posted by the account features ex-President Donald Trump's remarks about the train derailment, complete with Russian subtitles.

In a response to questions from the AP, Truth Puke said it aims to provide a “wide spectrum of views” and was surprised to be labeled a spreader of Russian propaganda, despite the account's heavy use of such material. Asked about the video with Russian subtitles, Truth Puke said it used the Russian language version of the Trump video for the sake of expediency.

“We can assure you that it was not done with any Russian propagandist intent in mind, we just like to put out things as quickly as we find them,” the company said.

Other accounts brag of their love for Russia. One account on Thursday reposted a bizarre claim that the U.S. was stealing humanitarian earthquake relief supplies donated to Syria by China. The account has 60,000 followers and is known as Donbass Devushka, after the region of Ukraine.

Another pro-Russian account recently tried to pick an online argument with Ukraine's defense department, posting photos of documents that it claimed came from the Wagner Group, a private military company owned by a Yevgeny Prigozhin, a key Putin ally. Prigozhin operates troll farms that have targeted U.S. social media users in the past. Last fall he boasted of his efforts to meddle with American democracy.

A separate Twitter account claiming to represent Wagner actively uses the site to recruit fighters.

“ Gentlemen, we have interfered, are interfering and will interfere," Prigozhin said last fall on the eve of the 2022 midterm elections in the U.S. "Carefully, precisely, surgically and in our own way, as we know how to do,” Prigozhin said at the time.
