What's up with the site saying "no sensor at this site, forecast only"? Is this from now on?

That would suck if true.

Try these links:
http://www.mxsocal.org/weather.aspx
http://www.co-ops.nos.noaa.gov/ports/ports_data.shtml?stn=9410647%20Angels%20Gate&data_type=All%20Meteorological
http://www.wrh.noaa.gov/mesowest/getobext.php?wfo=lox&sid=C5520&num=48

Not as good as the iWindsurf sensor, but better than nothing.

The sensor has been broken now for at least three days--it briefly gave data on Wednesday then shut back off. I have been emailing the iwindsurf tech team for three days--they have yet to respond.

If there is no Cabrillo sensor there is little point in paying for Iwindsurf. Virtually every other sailing site has free sensors--and cams.

Plus Cabrillo is surrounded by free sensors--at the LA Port and at the Marine Exchange up on the hill.

iwindsurf--you are dangling by a thread here.

Does anyone know if the camera on top of the lifeguard tower is going to be fixed anytime? I miss being able to catch what's going on from watchthewater.com.

Stuart Hill from iwindsurf emailed me to say they know about the outage at Cabrillo and will get the sensor fixed when they are able.

fyi... You can write them at watchthewater@fire.lacounty.gov

Here is the reply I got when I wrote them 5/2009

+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

Thank you for contacting the Coastal Monitoring Network.

Unfortunately, there is no specific estimate for the repair of the Cabrillo camera at the moment. Continue to check back on the Web site for updates.
Keep watching the water! See you at the beach!

Sincerely,

The Coastal Monitoring Network Team

Dear Los Angeles County Costal Monitoring Network or Whom It may concern,

First of I would like to thank you for the excellent services that you provide for the citizens of Los Angeles County. As an avid windsurfer I use the Cabrillo information as a source for planning my trips to the beach.
The failure of this camera and sensor is very unfortunate as it provides essential information in my decision to visit this area. Do you have any timeline on when this sensor will be replaced? I know that many others also use this resource and would be interested in anyways we could restore this service. Once again thank you for your service and I look forward to once again being able to view the current conditions at this landmark location.

Sincerely,

Benjamin Pirih

Cool - Cabrillo sensor working again, and there is now a second sensor at Cabrillo. Can't hurt to have a backup. Very Happy

I wouldn't start celebrating yet. Data looks highly questionable.

At this time:

Pier J is: 9 knots S g. 10
Angels Gate is 11 knots WSW g 14
Marine Exchange (san pedro bluff) is 17 W

"fixed" iwindsurf Cabrillo is: ENE 13
"new" iwindsurf CabrilloLE is: ENE 16

Seems unlikely that the wind at Cabrillo would be the exact opposite of the wind at Angels Gate. There's no other site on the map showing ENE.

The above link seems pretty useful too. Combined with the aviation discussion for lax for noaa, it looks pretty grim for cabrillo today...The fog bank seems pretty well entrenched right now.

Plus, the shorepound looks bad... May have to get a boogie board instead of risking a 100% carbon mast.

Who knows, maybe tomorrow?

Well, now it looks like it's trying to turn westerly... I'm wearing out the F5 key on my keyboard... what a crazy making sport...
