The foremost problem, Scott, is seeing them. No one runs into or over them deliberately, but spotting them in big whitecapped terrain is very difficult even when they are deployed legal and normally. Complicate that with the ones drifting free, poorly or not marked, and/or beneath the surface, and you have a potentially serious problem even without current. Sailors have gotten seriously injured by them, and with current or panic they become life-threatening.
Then there are the nets suspected of being placed for reasons other than maximizing fish catch. Individual fishermen have done far worse quite blatantly, as the public and BIA police can testify.

I think it has more to do with courtesy and safety than livelihood. Take bingen sailboard park for example... A public park with about 700' shoreline, a couple ramps to the waters edge and a fishing net right stuck right there??? Could they not pick a better place?? Your darn right they could! Moving the net 800' east or west is not going to effect the livelihood of that fisherman.
If a few fish get past the net I am sure there is some way he will survive...

If not mentioned earlier in the thread. There is a mass of net tangled around a float about 200 or so yards off the viento beach. It seems to be ejecting dead fish from time to time as I removed several dead fish from the beach in the past 3 weeks. Dead fish have been seen in the mass. This net is sometimes under water depending on the level of the water. Great management of the resource. |
