According to top researchers as cited in a book I'm about to ready to review here, the world's foremost exercise physiologists do not know the mechanism, cause, prevention, or cure of cramps. Neither hydration nor electrolytes are significantly relevant, and other than forcefully stretching an actively cramping muscle as a quick and temporary turnoff, the only proven cure for an ongoing cramp is

Watch this forum for that and many other very surprising peer-reviewed exercise physiology research findings. Many of them will change the workout and play habits of serious jocks like many of us.

I have seldom gotten cramps when out on the water. Only once did I get a pretty bad one that left me injured for a couple of days and it was surfing not windsurfing.

These are the recommendations I got from the physiotherapist that treated me:

- Eat a banana or other magnesium and potasium rich foods before hitting the water.
- Stay hydrated. Ideally some isotonic drink.
- Stretch. After warming up/before going into the water and after the session.

I tend to apply this rigurously and haven't had a cramp since. Also making shorter sessions might do the trick. 2 x 1.5 hours instead of going for 3 hours straight.
