Well, the Koch's are back, with disinformation. So just a few facts to show the spinner is up to his old tricks of half truths. Let's look at Stockton--victim of its own hubris, the housing bubble perpetrated by Republican policies, increasing health costs which enrich Republicans--and to a small degree, public pensions.
It is always dangerous to believe your own press clippings, and even worse to sell bonds based on them. In Stockton, now foreclosure capital of the United States, the median house price went from $110,000 in 2000 to $400,000 in 2009, and back to $110,000 in 2009. That bubble was the sub-prime hay days--and the solid American banks figured they could pocket the loan fees and pass the bad loans off to someone. Stockton's general fund fattened up on the sub-prime steroids--from $139 million to $186 million, 2001 to 2007--then dropped back to $155 million. Stockton made a bad decision to accord permanent health care benefits to a large class of retirees, but I don't think that is the main cause.
Now let's compare Jerry Brown to Scott Walker. Jerry proposes all of the essential changes to public pensions that are needed--raise the retirement age to 67 (you can now retire pretty nicely at 60 from State service) etc--earning endorsements from the State's Republicans--without going to war--or pandering to the Koch's. See http://www.governing.com/columns/public-money/col-Jerry-Browns-Plan-for-Comprehensive-Pension-Reform.html
Now I imagine with a bit of work I could debunk the rest of mrgybe's horseshit, and update the aphorism liars, damned liars, and retired oilies. |

Just a little more truth to oil speaking. Here is a bit of analysis (imagine that!) from the LA times about San Bernardino (don't forget that "r"), and Mammoth Lakes' problems. In the former, apparently the City staff had misrepresented the budget to the Council, in the latter it was a lawsuit by the developer. http://www.latimes.com/news/local/la-me-0711-san-bernardino-20120711,0,5646419.story
So the obvious solution, to the Kochs and their toadies in Wisconsin, Ohio, and Virginia, is to villify public employees, especially teachers, and support candidates that will cut taxes for the rich. When faced with a revenue problem, blame the uninvolved and cut taxes.
Oh, and by the way, this morning's newspapers report the lowest tax rates in thirty years. Republican policy, implemented by Obama. It hasn't worked without some level of stimulus spending, has it? And we should all ignore the root cause--Republican deregulation of the housing market that sent the economy into the ditch in the first place.
What a tool for the ultra-rich! |

Who knew? It was accounting errors that caused the SB insolvency, not spending and promising more than could be afforded. Blame the Koch brothers, the banks, the Republicans, Fox News, the oil companies.........just don't blame the incompetence and absence of fiscal restraint of the officials who have been running these places for decades. A familiar formula. |

Mr G. rather than blame politicians, give me one example of somebody you know who was at a big party full of hookers, 8-Balls, and Dom Perignon ....who, right at the peak of all the fun, turned off the music and told everyone to go home?
Point is , we know that whoever is in charge always spends money based on growth that won't materialize. With our current system of PAYING off campaign contributors , aint nuttin gonna change. |

mrgybe of the right wing sound byte without depth. There is no question that in many cities, many in California, benefits, particularly for firemen and police, are too generous. Retirement benefits in local government are 50% higher than in state government. Local government, of course, the level of government of most immediate response to an informed electorate. And of course, the State executive, whether in California or Wisconsin, has little direct responsibility.
The issue from day one is villifying those that didn't create the problem for political gain but relatively little traction. In that respect, Governor Walker is particularly distasteful, dishonest, and incompetent. In contrast, California has ended the redevelopment game, where local governments were in over their head. There is a real pension reform proposal on the table, made by someone that actually understands government and what is contracted for. And just yesterday, the Governor announced furloughs for the unions that wouldn't come to the table and bargain for wage concessions.
In contrast, Walker misrepresented the facts, gave the rich a tax break, and got involved in a huge conflict, where he was bailed out by the rich from other states who want to increase partisanship not progress. Kind of like 33 votes by House Republicans on repealing health care and almost no bills that represent the role of the Federal government. But he is such an right wing asshole that it is obvious why you like and shill for him. |
