Say it ain't so.... here a writer admit his paper the so called liberal meidia is a right wing rag. so much so that he even got to write a racist opinion piece with the editor allowing it to run. was the editor and manager of this paper fired NOPE.... only been there writing for 30 years...

Writer fired for calling Mike Brown an animal who needed to be put down

http://www.dailykos.com/story/2014/10/30/1340293/-Writer-fired-for-calling-Mike-Brown-an-animal-who-needed-to-be-put-down?detail=email#

Sometimes in life you get a second chance for mistakes you make.
When Don Surber, editorial columnist for Charleston's Daily Mail, called Mike Brown an "animal" who deserved to "be put down," and referred to protestors as "packs of racists," he crossed a line where second chances are much harder to come by.

Today Surber was fired by the Daily Mail for his incendiary comments about Mike Brown and protestors and the following statement, titled "Regrets and a Change," was issued:

Quote:
The point of view of The Charleston Daily Mail’s editorial page is conservative.
It was so disheartening to see the careless words of one of our own editorial writers describing a young man whose life ended tragically too soon.

Writing on his own personal blog, Don Surber discussed the tense race-related situation in Ferguson Missouri. He selected words that were unfortunate, inflammatory and, in our view, inexcusable.

[....]

As of this week, Mr. Surber is no longer employed by the Daily Mail. While his sometimes controversial and caustic columns were noted by many readers, few readers realize the in-depth institutional knowledge and substantial contributions he made during his 30 year career here.

Sadly, referring to African Americans with animal adjectives has a deep and ugly history in this country. Thankfully, the Daily Mail understands that one can be fully and staunchly conservative without advancing that ugly history into 2014. Mike Brown was not an animal, but rather a son, a brother, a friend, a teenager who died a tragic death.

I have been saying these right wing oil and medical ads are not counted as political in the spending. they are are IMHO. and this is pointed out by stewart. also note that the money these oil companies bring in in one day of income is more than the entire budget of any union in the USA in a year.

http://www.washingtonpost.com/blogs/the-fix/wp/2014/10/30/jon-stewart-realized-that-koch-industries-was-running-ads-during-his-show-so-he-trolled-them/

Jon Stewart realized that Koch Industries was running ads during his show. So he trolled them.

Quote:
Jon Stewart realized that Koch Industries (of David and Charles Koch fame/infamy) had been running ads during the Daily Show, and, unsurprisingly, decided to address it. The ad isn't political, it highlights the company's work and the people working there. Many wondered if the ads were designed to counter negative reactions to the Kochs' political activity when they debuted in June. An executive at Koch Industries denied that in a Washington Post story last month.

Holden disputed that notion, saying the ads are aimed at spotlighting jobs available because of Koch’s continued growth. “We have not been impacted by the political attacks in our recruiting, hiring or retention, nor have our businesses been impacted,” he said.

Where the toll has been felt, Holden said, is personally by the Kochs, who have faced harassment from opponents, including death threats.

The vitriol has affected Koch Industries employees as well, Cohlmia said.

“The collateral damage is something important that should be spoken about,” she said, adding: “We know the family. We know the businesses. And they are very good people. So the effect of that on us as employees, it’s very hard.”

Those buying ad time for the commercial likely saw the Daily Show's young audience as a perfect one to reach out to. However, it was also inevitable that Stewart would address the ad at some point. He didn't just point it out on Wednesday, though — he offered ideas on how he thought the ad could be improved.

The lesson: Make sure that the content surrounding your ad buy doesn't disagree with you and have the ability to try and neutralize the effectiveness of your ad. Because they probably will.

Virginia News Anchor Has Hissy Fit Over "Defiant Nurse"

Quote:
It's been bad enough watching cynical governors and rightwing pundits scramble to score political points at the expense of decent people who, at great personal sacrifice, have worked to save the lives of Ebola victims.

But I wasn't prepared to see my very own, seemingly benign local news anchor, Curt Autry, take to Facebook to rail to his fans that Kaci Hickox had placed herself "above the law" by going for a bicycle ride.

Perhaps taking a page from Chuck Todd, Autry also passed sentence on her career, saying Hickox's actions made her henceforth "unemployable." The entire rant is below. It's short but it packs a lot of meanness and falsehood into a tiny space:

"SO, THAT DEFIANT NURSE...in Maine broke quarantine again today, opting to go on a bike ride in direct violation of orders from the Governor there. Kaci Hickcox [sic] has now thumbed her nose at three Governors. I hope she realizes she's now unemployable. No hospital will hire someone who ignores medical protocol. Does she have Ebola? Probably not - but does that make her above the law? It's called civic responsibility lady - google it! #BYEfelicia"
How dare that woman be defiant. Does she think she has rights? Does she believe her medical knowledge and that of the Center for Disease Control can be allowed to trump gut feeling?
Autry didn't post this garbage on his personal account. No. It's on the official Facebook account for central Virgina's NBC affiliate, WWBT-12. WWBT is reputed to serve the largest area of any station in the state (although I can't find confirmation one way of the other), and proudly bills itself as the Number One News Station in Virginia.

Pity Virginia.

More than 1200 people "Liked" Autry's appeal to hysteria and judgment. But a few folks downthread challenged his claims. They noted Hickox wasn't acting as if she were above the law, because she wasn't actually breaking any. Nor was she ignoring medical protocol; she was following CDC guidelines to the letter.

That defiant nurse seems to have been right. Why won't the libertarians defend liberty against the clear abuse of two Republican governors acting as demagogues?

The defiant nurse kicks the governor's ass:

Quote:
BY STEPHANIE GOSK AND ERIN MCCLAM
A judge in Maine ruled Friday that Kaci Hickox, the nurse who treated Ebola patients and defied a state-imposed quarantine, can come and go as she pleases, as long as she is monitored for symptoms and lets health officials know where she’s going.

The same judge had issued a temporary order on Thursday night ordering Hickox to stay at least three feet away from other people and to stay away from crowds and public transportation.

But the judge, Charles C. LaVerdiere of state court, lifted those parts of the order on Friday. He found that authorities in Maine had not proved that restricting Hickox’s movement was necessary to protect the public from infection. He said that his order was pending a further hearing.

Hickox said she would comply, and she said she was grateful for support from all over the world. She announced no plans beyond staying in to watch a Halloween movie with her boyfriend on Friday night.

“Ebola is a scary disease. I have seen it face-to-face, and I know that we are nowhere near winning this battle,” she said. She said it would only be won “as we gain a better understanding about Ebola and public health, as we overcome the fear, and most importantly as we end the outbreak that is still going on in West Africa today.”

Gov. Paul LePage said the judge had put Hickox’s rights ahead of public safety.

“We don’t know what we don’t know about Ebola,” he told reporters. He said the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention “has been totally wrong.”

He also expressed frustration with how Hickox has handled herself: “I don’t trust her, and I don’t trust that we know enough about this disease to be so callous.”

The governor sounds just like NW. If I don't understand it, or disagree with the politics of the source, we take our right wing posture on faith. Athiests too.

he who owns the media makes the profit from political ads. as i have challenged the right wingers to show me the liberals owning the media. well it is virtually so low that one could say it is 90% plus right wing owned.

and right wingers say that money does not matter or influence IE a bunch supreme idiots ruling. in political spending but cite no evidence that is true.

here is the issue i have brought up but do not EVER hear th media talking about it. Dems raise this money for political advertising and give it to the right wing....................

But one thing remains largely unchanged: the belief that television ads are the best way to reach voters.

While campaigns are increasingly embracing online advertising, they still rely heavily on the tried-and-true technique of reaching voters on the airwaves. There, they can find a guaranteed audience of the most faithful voters: older people, who are particularly valuable in a low-turnout midterm election.

That demographic is a die-hard group of TV fans, watching more hours per day than ever. Live television viewing was down 13 percent for all ages except for viewers 55 and older, who are steadily watching their shows at their scheduled broadcast time, according to Nielsen. The median age of a broadcast or cable television viewer during the 2013-2014 TV season was 44.4 years old.

These viewers are also most likely to make it to the polls.

“Advertisers want to go where the eyeballs and ears are. There is a tendency for people who watch local news to be more likely to vote,” said Dennis Wharton, executive vice president of communications at the National Association of Broadcasters. .

The liberal media (yeah, I know; that's redundant) support most or all of these myths/lies/talking points/total BS despite reams of proof to the contrary:
1. Spending more money improves education.
2. Government spending stimulates the economy.
3. Republican candidates always have a big spending advantage over Democrats.
4. Raising the minimum wage helps the poor.
5. Global warming is causing increasingly violent weather.
6. Genetically modified food is dangerous.
7. Voter ID laws suppress minority turnout.
8. ObamaCare is gaining popularity.
9. The Keystone XL pipeline would increase oil spills.
10. Women are paid 77 cents on the dollar compared with men.

In her WSJ Op-Ed, Kate Bachelder very briefly (lest it be a book rather than an Op-ed) disproves them. At http://tinyurl.com/mly5wzn , Bret Rickert (?) presents her points.

Poor mac will still be typing his desperate rebuttals when the pumpkin pie is served.

isobars, am I convinced that the author's points outlined in your posted link make a convincing argument? Quite frankly, no. I think that it's a bit disingenuous to use selective facts to make a case. There's a reason why brevity had to be used to summarize the arguments against 10 very important topics. To most thoughtful folks, I think that a greater wealth of facts would most certainly reveal a different story than what has been presented in the commentary.

Regarding spending for education, what do you think it costs to upgrade our educational system to integrate computers in the process and keep things current? In 1976, computers weren't in the picture. The world of education has changed considerably, and that should be acknowledged.

Now, even a non-expert like myself can raise valid points to question what you accept as a convincing argument. What does that say? I could go on point by point to address the whole list, but it's not worth my time. You need to open your mind to a greater array of pertinent facts that exist outside the small bubble that you create for yourself.

lets see what them tea partiers really thought? I think even right wingers can undertant this one without the NRA or Fox telling them what and how to think.

John Adams: Laws for the liberal education of youth, especially of the lower class of people, are so extremely wise and useful that, to a humane and generous mind, no expense for this purpose would be thought extravagant. . .
