The next time you hear a politician use the
Word 'billion' in a casual manner, think about
whether you want the 'politicians' spending
YOUR tax money.

A billion is a difficult number to comprehend,
But one advertising agency did a good job of
Putting that figure into some perspective in
One of its releases.

A billion seconds ago it was 1959.

A billion minutes ago Jesus was alive.

A billion hours ago our ancestors were
living in the Stone Age.

A billion days ago no-one walked on the earth on two feet.

A billion dollars ago was only
8 hours and 20 minutes,
at the rate our government
is spending it.

While this thought is still fresh in our brain...
let's take a look at New Orleans ...
It's amazing what you can learn with some simple division.

Louisiana Senator,
Mary Landrieu (D)
was asking Congress for
250 BILLION DOLLARS
To rebuild New Orleans . Interesting number...
What does it mean?

A.
Well .. If you are one of the 484,674 residents of New Orleans
(every man, woman and child)
You each get $516,528

B.
Or... If you have one of the 188,251 homes in
New Orleans , your home gets $1,329,787.

C.
Or... If you are a family of four...
Your family gets $2,066,012.

Washington , D.C

HELLO!
Are all your calculators broken??

Building Permit Tax
CDL License Tax
Cigarette Tax
Corporate Income Tax
Dog License Tax
Federal Income Tax (Fed)
Federal Unemployment Tax (FU TA)
Fishing License Tax
Food License Tax
Fuel Permit Tax
Gasoline Tax
Hunting License Tax
Inheritance Tax
Inventory Tax
IRS Interest Charges (tax on top of tax)
IRS Penalties (tax on top of tax)
Liquor Tax
Luxury Tax
Marriage License Tax
Medicare Tax
Property Tax
Real Estate Tax
Service charge Taxes
Social Security Tax
Road Usage Tax (Truckers)
Sales Taxes
Recreational Vehicle Tax
School Tax
State Income Tax
State Unemployment Tax (SUTA)
Telephone Federal Excise Tax
Telephone Federal Universal Service Fee Tax
Telephone Federal, State and Local Surcharge Tax
Telephone Minimum Usage Surcharge Tax
Telephone Recurring and Non-recurring Charges Tax
Telephone State and Local Tax
Telephone Usage Charge Tax
Utility Tax
Vehicle License Registration Tax
Vehicle Sales Tax
Watercraft Registration Tax
Well Permit Tax
Workers Compensation Tax
(And to think, we left British Rule to avoid so many taxes)

STILL THINK THIS IS FUNNY?

Not one of these taxes existed 100 years ago...
And our nation was the most prosperous in the world.

We had absolutely no national debt...
We had the largest middle class in the world...
And Mom stayed home to raise the kids.

What happened?
Can you spell

'politicians'!

Bard--if you had class you would attribute your right wing nonsense. Cribbed from an e-mail you receive as you are busy washing your own mind for the oligarchs. Here, from the Daily Kos, is a rebuttal:

Well, I couldn't resist some kind of rebuttal, so I replied the following:

Quote:
A respectful rebuttal.
There's so much wrong with this email, it's hard to know where to begin. But let's start by pointing out that the number in the subject line is a trillion, not a billion.

Yes, a billion seems like a very large number, especially as presented in the email below. Let's not forget, however, that the U.S. economy generates 11.5 trillion dollars in output every year - that's practically $365,000 every second of every minute of every hour of every day of every week of every year. By the method below of reckoning how much a billion is, Mary Landrieu is asking for only 7.9 days' worth of the American economy to rebuild one of its formerly premier cities. 7.9 days is not much! That's a vacation to a lot of people.

And it's hardly the case that the money would just go to a few houses - what a ridiculous notion! The whole city needs rebuilding. Roads, parks, sewers, electrical system, dikes to hold the water back... The author of the email below barfed up some numbers without knowing what he was talking about.

Also, someone please ask the author of the email below why he doesn't want to rebuild New Orleans, because he obviously thinks it's a bad idea. Some people want to build this country, and some people only want to complain how much it costs.

And where, exactly, were we 100 years ago in 1911, a time the author of the email seems to like so much?

- We had no publicly-financed highway system. It took over a month to get from one side of the country to another unless you took a private, expensive train.

- Mom stayed at home with the kids? Sure, because she couldn't work, unless she wanted to be a teacher, a nurse, or a nun. Oh, and she didn't have the right to vote.

- We had no publicly-financed health care system. Thousands of women died in childbirth, and thousands of children died every year of childhood diseases we don't worry about any more.

- There was no Social Security. If you had no money when you got too old to work, you lived off of your family, or you starved.

- There was no Medicare. If you got sick and couldn't afford to pay the doctor, you died before your time.

- There was no Medicaid. If you were poor and sick and couldn't afford to pay the doctor, you died.

- There were no governmental administrations mandating workplace safety; if you got injured on the job, and hundreds of thousands did every year, tough luck - your employer didn't have to take care of you and you couldn't sue them. They got off scot-free while you starved.

- There were no governmental administration mandating food or drug safety. If someone sold you bad food, or a drug that made you sicker or didn't cure you, tough luck.

- Most rural parts of the country didn't have electricity. When it got dark outside, you were done for the day.

In short, life for most Americans 100 years ago was, compared to how things are today, like living in a third-world country. Someone please ask the author of the email below to move to Guatemala and live as one of the natives for a year, then tell us how wonderful it is!

Additionally:

- We had no Air Force, and hardly any Army or Navy (standing armies became a feature of the American economy only after World War II).

- We didn't have 500+ military installations around the world for who knows what purpose.

- We weren't acting as occupiers in two Middle East countries with no end in sight.

Listen - We live in one of the largest, most economically and technologically complex societies the world has ever seen. It takes money to run an organization like that! People who complain how much a billion is don't understand the country they live in. They think they can drop a Yugo engine into a Ferrarri and the car will still go fast.

It's easy for the author of the email to blame politicians for things he doesn't understand. Me? I'm happy about those billions. I'm happy Landrieu is trying to get New Orleans rebuilt. And I'm happy we live in the country we live in and not some fuzzy-headed vision of how good things used to be.

Sure, there's more I could have said, but it got the point across. Enjoy.

With all the hustle and bustle of our lives, the stress at work (or the stress of not being able to find work), and all the messages we (that's right, women AND men) receive about not being attractive, smart, funny, thin, good, accomplished...or whatever enough....let's all take a moment to brag about ourselves!New Site.
