Okay so I finally got a Quad a very nice RRD 92l. It comes with 9cm fins up front and 16cm fins in the back. These work fine with my 5.2m sail but seem a bit sticky. I will keep them for my 6.2m sail but I am thinking of getting something smaller for my other sails. People have nice things to say about K4 fins so I am looking at 8cm shark tooth up front and a 15or 14cm Flex for the rear.
So whaddya think I weigh 200lbs and am curious what other sailors run on their Quads. Please include your weight and board size too. Thanx!

Before you go too crazy with different sized fins, see if you can simply tighten up the grouping of the existing fins. If possible, slide the front fins back and/or the back fins forward and re-assess. That should loosen things up significantly.

I rarely change fin sets on my quads, regardless of whether I'm pumping to plane on 5.3 or holding on tight on a 3.6. This is on a Tabou DaCurve 85 at 170 pounds. Without the torque of a single fin, the quads stay nice and settled, even when overpowered.

Regarding weed fins, (thanks for the link U2U2U2), I'd actually point you to Makani's Walu Weed, here:

These fins are exceptionally loose with their swept back shape and thin/narrow tips.

Hope that helps!

the Walu is the same weed fin I recommended. great minds .. drink the same beer ? right ?

Depending on which size slot box is on the RRD 92L is it the Wave Cult ? he may get a little fore aft movement, the Makanis are 10cm long at the base.

Boy were you right about moving the fins! Sailed yesterday at the coast and set my fins according to the Boardseeker recommendation front all the way up rears 5cm back. Felt like I was towing a small animal in the back. Absolute crap. Came in talked to my friends who gave me the 2 finger rule for separation (4cm) and moved the front all the way back. Different board planed up nicely and still slashy on the wave. I think it can be even better with different fins as all my friends were pretty high on the K4 fins.
The Makani Weed fins also look nice and would move your cluster even further back with all that rake.

What Andy said. My Goya Quad 93 has a very smooth ride over a
huge wind range. I confirmed this at San Carlos as well. Save your
money for now and mess with the placement first.

Took my Quad 7'4" out of the bag to check how it was set up. 3cm apart lots of toe in and asymmetrical fins to boot. I know this board works as I have been surfing it for 6 years.

There are some similarities surf to windsurf boards/fins/ what they do. The ::::: to my way of thinking major difference is surf boards don't need to go upwind. The Fanatic in the photo in its original configuration, as shown IT pointed the nose up wind even when actually going straight , and twitchy/skaty was a good description. This board had quite a lot of toe, I played with fins to no end, and finally gave up, and moved the rear fins into a typical twin/quad location, and the front in and rear ward a little.

this below is from both surf and windsurf board builder, it really related to this project, and after several discussions decided to move the fins. Note that this was the first set of ProBox that I had to extract, and I was extremely impressed that it took quite a lot of effect to remove. **********

I suggest that the big difference between windsurf and surf boards is the amount of sideways force that is exerted on the board and fins to counteract the pressure from the sail, particularly when sailing upwind. Having the rear fins closer together helps the board track straighter further apart makes the board more twitchy or skatey. Also with the fins further apart it is more likely that the outside fin in a turn will break clear or be in very turbulent water meaning that you will loose drive.***********************

This was set up with the fins very close to the rail, so to use small fins.

What I have been finding out is asymmetrical fins with the correct toe in
work .Others as well the amount needs to be 2 + . Right now asymmetrical fins are not common in windsurf boxes. opposite actually

those sizes are consistent with mine on that size board, course so much depends on the board shape, sail size and relevant conditions.

One of my friends gave me his setup which is a bit different. He measures from the tail of the board to the front of the fin at the base. 12" for the rear and 16" for the fronts.
This makes sense because the old single fin rule was line up the fin screw with the rear strap screw.
So I tried this but as you can see from the pics its a no go where my boxes are placed.
There is always surgery! Wink US boxes are stupid heavy and the slot boxes are a big improvement. I figure could easily drop a pound in weight.
Another option is Future fins. Check out the pic of this Aussie custom!
Love that paint job!
