One of the common misunderstandings of people who aren't good with numbers is to lump very different phenomena together. Any legitimate analytical effort teases out different populations and treats them differently statistically. That can and should be done with gun violence, and we should not lose sight of the fact that we can make progress, and should not let perfect be the enemy of good.

The population of incidents associated with the drug trade are very different than the population of incidents associated with accidents, domestic violence, and terrorism. We should call political attacks, whether by those with a leftist ideology or those with a right wing ideology acts of terrorism.

Unfortunately, Republicans in Congress under the sway of the NRA and gun nuts have forbidden collection of systematic data on the number and causes of gun violence. With 40,000 deaths a year, and a long term record, there is plenty of potential data that could be analyzed to ascertain causes. Without a government sponsored effort that has credibility, we are left with analyses from organizations like the NRA and the SPLC that have axes to grind and look at the data with a particular bias. Since the left doesn't trust right-wing sources, and the right doesn't trust left-wing sources, we shout at each other without listening.

Local newspapers do print analyses of killings in Oakland and in surrounding cities. I also hear the stories of the more amazing assaults from my son-in-law, including dealers surviving shooting and going back to the street. In Oakland in 2018 there were 68 murders--the lowest level since 1999. (Contrary to claims by Trump, crime and particularly violent crime has been falling for decades, and is lower in cities with high numbers of immigrants.) Most of the violence that my son-on-law sees as an Oakland cop is associated with the drug trade--competition for turf, pay-back for rip-offs, armed robberies (even now of legal grows), and revenge. Berkeley's murders are much rarer, and most seem to be associated with gangs and drugs. Richmond was able to decrease the rate of murder dramatically with a number of measures including community policing.

I would imagine that the same sad story is true in most urban cities with a large group of poor people that see little hope for economic advancement outside of selling drugs.

Bull shit on crime numbers going down....more like reported crime numbers going down. No city in America wants to be labeled a crime hotspot, so they fudge and play with numbers all the time.

When the facts don’t support your paranoia—turn to Breitbart and just make something up. Dumbest guy on the forum.

Crime rates—property and violent crimes both—are about half of what they were in 1993. Most people think the opposite. Is ignorance hereditary?

4 things our founding fathers never imagined. Wonder if they would think the same in this age? I doubt it.

Concrete, cars, stoplights, assault rifles.

Concrete was invented by the Romans. Many of our founders lived to see steam powered engines and and early machine gun. FYI.

In 1718, London lawyer James Puckle patented the “Defence Gun.” The first well-documented rapid-fire gun in the world, the Defence Gun is considered a precursor of the machine gun. Since the 14th century, inventors had been attempting to create small caliber, rapid-fire artillery.

too funny,

it did not work....

da Vinci invented the helicopter too, but guess what it did not work. BTW da Vici also invented the machinegun that also did not work.

hey moron why don't you go get in a flux capacitor time travel machine... and go back to hell where you hatched.

The Puckle Gun or Defense Gun
by Ben Johnson
The Puckle Gun, or Defense Gun as it was also known, was invented and patented in 1718 by the London lawyer James Puckle. This early automatic weapon was rather bizarrely designed to fire round bullets at Christians and square bullets at the Muslim Turks. Square bullets were believed to cause more severe wounding than round ones, and according to the 1718 patent, ‘would convince the Turks of the benefits of Christian civilisation’.

To see why the Turks were specifically targeted, we have to look at this invention in the context of the time. By the turn of the 18th century the powerful Ottoman Empire controlled much of southeast Europe, western Asia and North Africa, and was now engaged in a series of wars with European powers. The Turks were starting to push into Eastern Europe, converting the conquered Christian population to Islam.

The Ottomans also controlled much of the southern and eastern Mediterranean coastline. Using small fast boats, the Turks were constantly raiding and boarding foreign ships, much like Somali pirates today. These small vessels were too fast for broadside cannon to be used effectively against them.

Puckle Gun HUK

Quote:
Puckle’s gun was designed to prevent just such a boarding of a ship at sea. A single-barrelled flintlock weapon fitted with a multi-shot revolving cylinder, this portable revolver-type gun was mounted on a tripod. At the time the gun was patented in 1718, a musket could be loaded and fired 3 times a minute. The vastly superior Puckle Gun fired nine shots per minute and was the world’s first machine gun.

In 1717 it underwent trials at Woolwich but was rejected for government use, one reason being that the flintlock mechanism was too unreliable. This did not however deter Puckle from patenting the machine and then setting up a company in 1721 to market the gun. Ahead of its time in concept, it could not overcome the handicap of 18th century flintlock technology. The Puckle Gun failed to attract investors and was not a commercial success.

MEXICO CITY —

 Let's grab their guns

The assailants locked the doors and emergency exits. Then they doused the strip club with gasoline and set it on fire.

The inferno that engulfed the White Horse bar in southern Mexico on Tuesday night killed 27 people and injured more than a dozen others. Photos taken after the flames were extinguished showed the bodies of semi-nude women strewn amid charred barstools.

The attack, which took place in the Gulf Coast city of Coatzacoalcos, was probably an act of retaliation after the bar owner refused to let a gang sell drugs there, Veracruz Gov. Cuitlahuac Garcia said. The owner was kidnapped before the bar was set ablaze, he said.

The attack came almost eight years to the day after a similar fire at a casino in the northern city of Monterrey killed 52 people, and it raised concerns that Mexico’s criminal groups may returning to the kind of spectacular acts of violence that characterized earlier periods of insecurity here.

why moron do you think they did not have guns when they kidnapped the owner or did this. you have the thinking pattern/ability of an infant.

When Moscow Malibu Barfie talks a stench overwelms the location.
