I have used gloves like these to water ski. They work. The palm strap is the key.

If you are using a harness and have your lines adjusted correctly, you shouldn't need special gloves to grasp the boom. You should be able to rest your hands on the boom while sailing in a straight line with no grip (or even let go completely).

I used to suffer from carpal tunnel after sailing until I learned to relax my grip and let the harness do the work. One of the simplest changes was moving my thumbs to the same side of the boom (top) as the fingers rather than grasping around the boom.

Personally I would be very hesitant to attach my hands in any way to the boom. In a crash this could result in some bad shoulder rotations. Something I would avoid at all cost.

I also agree with proper harness line location (I'm a big fan of the mono lines also) and an overhand grip with the thumbs on the top. This goes a long way in reducing hand and arm stress...

Thumbs under is a bad idea at any time. In big waves it causes thumb injuries.
In a simple crash on the flat there are usually not big forces on the sail tearing it out of your hands.

DA CLAW !!
What, nobody remembers "Da Claw"?
A velcro wrist strap that held a flat plastic hook shaped thing that extended from your palm to hook around your booms.
Guarenteed to send you off to the most distance covering launch that you've ever had, you couldn't let go when you needed to.
They didn't last long on the market, they went by way of the jibeless sail, another joke of a try.
You have to go back and check out your old Windsurf mags from the early to mid 80's, those ads are there.

The waterski gloves with the dowel actually work amazingly well. They transfer all of the pressure off the fingers and onto the wrist.

I was a gymnast for many years and the grips used the same principle. They release when you open your hands to let go and do not stick to the boom like a hook would. If they did not let go easily gynmasts would be in big trouble when they release from an apparatus to do a dismount such as the rings.

One year I developed bad golfers or tennis elbow and this was the solution for me to prevent re occurance.

They work wonderful (although a bit pricey)
