I've been windsurfing for 1yr. I have a Starboard GO 165L and BIC 110L boards.

Would the 7.2m NP Hellcat be good for me? I do like the idea of the speed.

My conditions:
- I sail in somewhat choppy water with avg. 10-15kt. wind.

I can do the following:
- tack
- heli-tack
- gybe
- working on carve gybe
- plane in footstraps
- can't water start consistently yet

where do you sail? how often? do you have to deal with surf? hellcats have tube battens or rods? beware tube battens in the surf. they shatter pretty easily. other than that, i've heard and felt great things about the HC sail.

Hey Mr. Ghost,

I don't have any experience with the Hellcat, but Northwave is in the final
2 weeks of their 40% off winter sale, and they could make you a
511 in a 7.2 or, better yet for your stated conditions, a 7.7.
You will probably have to call them to find out what that price actually is.

I am not affiliated with NW other than a long time user of their sails

Welcome to our very fun and cool sport !!!
It's a challenge... but has great rewards for those with perseverance and patience (heavy on the perseverance Smile

Yes... those questions would be good, to know answers to -
And these -
How much do you weigh?
How consistently are you using a harness?
What are your other sails (size and general type)?

You've done REALLY well, learning all those moves in just one year, Congrats !!
I imagine, you must live somewhere warm... to get so much sailing in.
And I bet you're under 200 lbs to be sailing those boards, as a newbie, in that wind, and learning all that stuff.

Anyway, I'm sure that 7.2 would be a very good sail for you.
Keep up the great job !!

Greg Smile

Do you already have a mast or will you be needing one of those as well? If you have a mast, what brand of mast is it? As already stated your weight will play a large part in what size sail you need for 10-15 knts.

Thank you for the replies.

I actually live in Canada near Toronto. I sail on Lake Ontario and also in Burlington Bay. Sometimes I trek up to Georgian Bay.

It is not surf, just the lake is choppy at times. I do not live somewhere warm but last year when I started the sport I took a couple lessons and sailed about 2x week for hours. Was very addicted and I wanted to get over that learning curve ASAP.

I'm 5'7" and weigh 165lbs. I use my harness all the time. My current sail is what I learned on. It is a 6.2 neil pryde wave sail. I know it was not ideal for my conditions (no surf) but it was easy to maneuver and learn on.

90% of the time I have been using the 165L. I have more difficulty on the 110L but am using it more. I haven't sailed since September because of our winter but will be returning to the water at the end of March.

Thank you!

It's a Neil Pryde mast. 460 is all I know.

http://www.hotsailsmauishop.com/liquid-special-offer.aspx

the question about which mast to do with the bend curve, the varieties are middle of the road to soft to stiff top.

the NP mast should be a softer top.

The HotSails above will be ok with your NP mast as well any NP sail
the Hellcat would not be a bad option Solar, you want to stay more on the freeride than racy models, which are less than user friendly.

10-15 @ 165 lbs. Sticking with a Neil Pryde sail is a no brainer since you have an NP mast. A 7.2 would be ok but the 7.7 Hellcat would be better for 10-15 with that Go.

For 10-15 kt. I like the Liquid. Light, powerful, easy handling, easy waterstart. Should be perfectly compatible with your mast. Absence of that low foot batten should be a plus in that regard. The Hellcat will be faster and perhaps more stable in higher winds (maybe 17+) but that low foot batten might not rotate in very light wind after the sail has a couple of seasons on it, correct mast or not. Choices, yes!
