Awesome video - you just made my morning. Excellent video footage especially that time lapse sunset plus great sound track selection. Glad you scored a killer Hatteras trip - I was watching the wind readings all last week down there wondering who was catching it big time. Sweet!

was it windy? you guys looked a little under powered at times, perhaps? it always that fine line, how much sail and board to use, right? waves looked great. the camera never fully shows the ripples on the water. always looks about 10 knots less than it really is..... mccullah looked lit.

I had the classic working man's curse... It was blowing side shore at 30mph all day. Then I showed up, and the wind died and switched more offshore every time I hit the water, so I was in pure schlog and surf mode on 4.2/4.7 and 85. It was still PLENTY of fun!!

work is a four letter word.

done the under powered thing more than i ever want to ever again. that means i tend to stay on a large powerful board and a large (ish) kinda sail. i will trim the tensions and grommet settings to add or spill power. also, might go with a slightly smaller fin. been really into using a 105 liter or 111 liter even in gales, esp if onshore. call it my security blanket, but i just dislike that under powered feeling of not having tons of power to accelerate past bogging sections or extended close outs.

by product of all that power? sometimes, i get tired a bit early from sailing so lit. usually worth it for a floridian, since our epic days are so widely spaced. cheers.

Hi John,

I would guess that me on an 85 is Very similar to you on a 105... Give or take a few liters, of course.

And while, yes, I would've had a touch more juice with a larger sail, the extra rig weight tends to diminish the effect when you're on a board that just barely floats you, and you aren't planing anyway. Just my 2 cents.

I tend to be pretty stoked as long as I can pump into a wave. Once I start missing waves even with good positioning, it's time to upsize board and rig.

All of this is extremely particular to local conditions, of course! In the vid, I was litsky on the outside on 4.2/4.7, but inside was about 8-15mph... So, pretty much anything would have worked Laughing
