looks like the scam where they send you a [phony] cashier's check written for more than the item is selling for (woops) and then ask you to send the remainder in cash. Craigslist has info on these.

I got the exact same reply to an ad I placed on MTBR.com for a pair of bike tires. The respondant is Steven Clayton. I was suspicious because I could not get an address and now I am doubly suspicious.

If you'll send me the $100 for safe keeping I'll contact the buyer, work out the sale, and make sure that they don't get the money and just walk off with it.

"Smells like" a scam"?
I got the same response, including shipping to Nigeria, for an RV I was selling years ago.

There is no room for the words, "suspicious" or "smell" here. I am betting you $1,000 in cash, right here in print in public view, that that response is a scam.

IMO, however, that promise gives me a soap box and preaching license. Here goes, for your protection:
No offense, but your and others' uncertainty is alarming. That ad response, in various guises, has been printed in literally hundreds of scam warnings over the last decade or longer. Anyone who has the SLIGHTEST doubt of its intent to screw them is dangerously naive, and should be reading MUCH more consumer literature (financial, health, nutrition, politics, news, etc.) for his own good. Take this unsolicited advice from an old man who's been around many blocks in those and many other arenas: There's too much at stake to presume some overseer is going to protect us from people, including licensed professionals, with ill will or simple ignorance. Watching out for yourself, including but not limited to initiating this thread, will very likely save or make you hundreds of thousands of dollars and reap huge non-monetary benefits over your life span. It has for me, and I have no doubts it can for most people.

You're on the right track in asking for advice. Now ramp that up a hundredfold, and you'll be way ahead of the rest of the pack in both your career and personal worlds.

Insist in your ad that all respondents include their name, phone number, and their primary sailing site. If they don't include that in their email, delete it.

As soon as you see the generic "the item" phrase don't bother. It's quite obvious they're fishing.
