Leo Saturday, super gusty. Lost rig on the outside and made the long paddle in.

"Lost rig"?? I'm sure there's a story behind that!
Glad you made it back JP.

Thank you Carl. There is a story and an embarrassing one at that! In my haste to get rigged and get out I did not take the extra step to make sure the pin of my chinook mast base was securely attached to the base plate. The retaining clip gradually worked it's way loose after several out and back runs and the rig detached on the outside (never close to shore right?). I tried like hell to get the rig reattached but it was just too difficult and I was getting chilled and tired so I made the fateful decision to abandon it and paddle for shore.

If it makes you feel better I did the same at TI two seasons ago in a 4.3 day. Fortunately another windsurfer stopped and the two of us managed to reattach the board!!!!! Shocked Glad you made it back!

Thanks man, I definitely appreciate that. I guess it has to happen to everyone at least once.

You know, I think if you sail long enough it does happen to almost everyone.
And it really really helps to have 2 people to reconnect it on the water.

Hi John, ouch! I helped a guy at Kanaha on the outside put the euro pin back in in rough conditions. Def took 2 of us to do it. I did the same with a bolt at old Morgan Lake long time ago. Rig washed back in later, only the sail was trashed as it was shredded on the rocks. Everything else salvageable.

I forgot to tighten my universal at Rowena on a 4.5 day. My first gybe on the far side left me holding my sail as my board skipped away with no one around. I managed to swim for my board and got back to my rig. Freaking out in the swell and very windy conditions, I flipped the board on it's side and took one desperate stab assuming I'd be paddling soon. To my astonishment, it went in and slid into position like I was on the beach. I tightened that sucker down so tight needed help to unscrew it.

Looks like I'm in pretty good company. The risk we take, right? One thing I might add is that had I been on an old school narrow board I might have been able to turn it on it's side but at 72cm I just couldn't get my arm around it to hold it in place while grabbing the mast with my other arm all while dealing with 20kt wind chop. Thanks all for the moral support!
