Another pleasant Dawn Patrol thanks to a good ebb tide and wind. Here's John Waters windsurfing the swells next to me.

Today combined an ebb tide with plenty of wind in the morning. I sailed 4.5 sail and 75L board from dawn to exhaustion. The image is of Jason Voss doing one of his many loops this morning.

Once again, with a nice ebb tide there was lots of wind this morning. I sailed my 65L Roberts custom with a 4.2 sail in the highest wind at about 7 A.M. but mostly I sailed a 4.7 with a 75L board. Eric Rogind is pictured.

Well as the Coast was not looking very promising, I debated whether to go back to The Lake, but then again, Natural Bridges might come up. Ended up Pleasure Point sky cleared in its vicinity, Southwest wind came up a bit, and tide was at the right height. So went there.
Surf has been pretty flat, but I caught an overhead wave at Sewers Peak. Pic below:

|
|
Not many places nearby looking promising with the big eddy off of the coast. Decided to go ahead and windsurf with the sailSUP in light wind in the inner Monterey Bay. Was contemplating maybe taking some video of windsurfing with the great whites at The Park so threw the GoPro in the van. Got the gear hiked into the beach at New Brighton and with a good part of the area covered in red tide and the boats not showing definite signs of spotting sharks, I decided not to hike back to the van to get the camera. I have to carry the gear on my head to the beach so cannot take the camera easily at the same time as I was planning on using a helmet mount so as to be able to direct it at the shark should I spot one.
Wind was almost non-existent as I launched. Picked up a little as I got farther from shore. Kept an eye out for sharks, but did not see any. Had not seen any from the cliffs the day before either.
Saw that a windsurfer was off of Capitola and appeared to be heading to Privates. So headed that way as well. No surf in The Playground. Appeared to be nil at Capitola as well. Biggest wave I had seen so far came from the wake of a 45 foot power boat.
Trimaran was sailing in the anchorage of Capitola and getting one hull in the air. It had a tall aspect ratio and a white cat emblem near the bottom of the sail.
Sailed on up to Privates and it was the usual character windsurfing there. This time he had an inflatable board. I believe it was him I saw windsurfing there yesterday and the wind was even lighter. So much so that not even I went out.
Well, the wind was not much and the swell was not much, but we each managed to tag a few waves. Some only partially as the wind would quit not giving the assist we needed to get a complete ride.
Still nice to be out on the water powered by wind and a sail.
We headed back, he to Capitola and me to New Brighton.
I passed over a few clouds of bait fish on the way. I had discovered the week before that at 4 knots they panicked and scattered creating openings in the cloud below me and at 2 knots they did not seem to care and stayed balled up. Today, at 3.6 knots they also did not seem to care as I passed above them. Maybe all of the predators were tired and full bellied. A few of the fishermen in boats and kayaks I had spoken with today said the bite was slow. Even the birds did not seem interested in eating another bite and were resting on the water or on the beaches.
I arrived at New Brighton and noticed that if I sailed for two more minutes, I would have a rounded two hour session, so headed out instead of in and looked for sharks. Then I saw the boat, Velocity, was headed in towards me. I held my course and he changed his. Reminded me of a game I played in a tiny sailboat as a teenager where I would sail a course that would require a power boat to change direction as the courses intersected and a sail powered boat had right of way over a motor powered boat. Not necessarily smart, but, hey, I was a teen ager.
The reason I was a little surprised that the Velocity changed course was that I had heard that the Captain was a bit of a hard ass. One windsurfer friend had called a MayDay from his radio off of West Cliff and the Velocity was not that far away and never responded. The Harbor Patrol did respond and picked him up and took him to The Harbor. Another windsurfer friend, who also SUPS, told me the captain was known to just mow down SUPpers in the Harbor if they were in the way.
So as I was headed in, the Velocity had turned and now was intersecting my path. They were going slow as they were looking for sharks. They were between me and my landing point on New Brighton Beach. As I neared the craft, it stopped, dead in my path. So I stopped. I had just done a lot of holding position while awaiting swell and wind to line up at Privates, so I was in practice. He stayed in position as did I, just feathering the sail to hold my spot. Finally he eased forward and I beared off and sailed around his stern and into the beach. All the while looking for sharks and seeing none.

The image shows another day of windsurfing at Sherman Island. It has been enlarged, so don't think that it is Mt. Diablo way behind the marker (it is actually just a little peak to the West). This shows one of the markers where iWindsurf references wind averages on the Sacramento River and lots of us do appreciate it. iWindsurf reported that the Sign posted over 30 at its high point just after dawn.
