Sometimes I feel like a sucker for shelling out $50 for a downhaul winch but it does work well in that one can easily see and watch the effects of downhaul on the sail. I think the winch is especially great for those new to the sport. The knot trick is a great thing to have in the back pocket however.

I do not feel like a sucker for owning a winch (and a cleat) and I like the knot trick too. For fine tuning a sail nothing matches a winch. Once you have owned a sail for awhile and have the tuning figured out, you can then use a cleat (or the knot) to get you where you need to be. For a big race sail I would still use the winch.
