For once I agree with the thrust of mrgybe. While little of the mess in the Middle East can be traced to Obama, rather than to the neocons, I think he was ill-advised to opine (rather carelessly) about a red line. Doubling down on it is more like something mrgybe would do.

But back to the other part of the thread, the attitude and accomplishments of the Tea party. Was sent this marvelous quote yesterday by a rather distinguished Republican President:

Quote:
“Should any political party attempt to abolish social security unemployment insurance and eliminate labor laws and farm programs you would not hear of that party again in our political history. There is a tiny splinter group of course that believes you can do these things. Among them are a few other Texas oil millionaires and an occasional politician or business man from other areas. Their number is negligible and they are stupid.”
― Dwight D. Eisenhower

While they are emboldened again, they are still stupid. Now we can expect our Canadian commentor to scold me--and Dwight--for such intemperate language, no matter how true.

Another significant contribution--to the severity of the fires in Colorado and California. Sequestration has resulted in the loss of 500 fire fighters, as the national forests face their worst fire year in some time. Too early to tell yet if that is a result of climate change, but it is clear that the Tea Party contempt for government, and lack of understanding of its services, are increasing, not decreasing, Federal expenses. Among the cuts from prior years and sequestration--clearing of vegetation that could have reduced the severity--and cost--of the fires.

Yes, let's put those who don't understand government, hate it by instinct, and have no experience or desire to understand its services, in charge. Funded, of course, by the Koch brothers.

Boggsy, I used Al Qaeda as an example for the sake of brevity. There are numerous factions within the Syrian rebel groups. All indications are that the large majority are not US sympathizers......same as in Iraq, Libya, Egypt. So we have a regime that despises us, fighting rebel groups that despise us, and we want to get in the middle? The President has been forced out front on this one. This will be a test of his leadership. Take it to Congress for approval perhaps, so there is someone to blame no matter which way the vote goes?

Certainly the blanket condemnation of Mr Obama's actions thus far are prevalent. As they were when Mr Bush was making mistake after mistake in the ME conflicts of the past decade. I don't know what we should do, I really don't...but the simple question is whether we bomb or not...its not easy. But in regards to Egypt, Cheney scolded Obama for NOT intervening and supporting Mubarrak, his old buddy. It was Obama's decision to not intervene which was a change in policy. When civilians are being slaughtered, I cant imagine doing nothing.

Quite the contrary elder statesman. It's good to see the Repubs have turned the corner into peaceniks...

They're not peaceniks.

They're whatever-opposes-Obama-today-niks.

If Obama wanted to paint all the tanks drab olive green, they'd claim it's a socialist plot and scream for purple.

John Kerry just made it clear we are going in. At least Bibi will be pleased.

I suppose every president deserves their "Bomber Jacket" Moment......didn't he win the Nobel Peace Prize?

There is a better reason than political cover to go to Congress. For decades the war-making power has drifted away from Congress, and to the President. Congress as a whole has not struggled. While I am ok with that for minor policing activities, I think it is a bad trend. Re-establishing the role of advise and consent, and smoking out the hawks and Obama-haters who will attack whatever he does (remember the frequent reversals of Republican position on Libya, mirrored on this forum) is ample reason to consult Congress.

President Obama said Saturday that he'll seek approval from Congress -- due back September 9 -- for military action against Syria.

It's such a burden being right all the time. A bold leader.

So Assad has 10 days to fry as many men, women, and children that he can, and then declare victory and a truce.

But it is not that easy. The Israelis want an excuse to bomb Iran. The radicals want American help. Both sides have equal reason to fake another humanitarian tragedy. There are so many factions who could have set off the gas that it makes your head spin.

The President is quivering with rage.........as he should be.........at the brutal killing of women and children with chemical weapons. He is so outraged that he is going to demand that Congress to approve action against the alleged perpetrators..........when they return from their five week vacation. No need to rush these things. What would Churchill, or any real leader have done? He would have had all their asses back in town tomorrow for a vote..........or he would have done what the thought was right and screw the political consequences. The President was presented with a test of his leadership........he failed the test.
