Sorry, my bad, should have noted that I was referring to things like the original Windsurfer, or my O'Brien Sensation, or one of the many many pieces of crap that came out of that era. Haven't sailed a Megacat since 1992, and never sailed an Equipe, but I definitely would like to see how they stack up against the Kona. I'd bet the Kona would beat them both, but maybe not by that much.

I don't know what you mean by "beat them both." The original Windsurfer would "beat" your Kona in displacement conditions every time. The Mistral or Fanatic raceboards of the late 80's/early 90's would "beat" the Kona until wind speeds get over 15 (guessing at the speed - could be a little lower or higher), and will almost always go upwind better (so would "beat" the Kona around a course). In high winds, the Kona will be fastest, I would guess.

I think the Kona is likely a great board (I have the Kona Surf, never sailed the K1 - and I have Equipe and MegaCat), but like every other board, it is a careful balance of compromises, not the perfect solution. But it's certainly much more user-friendly than raceboards - and you can take it in the surf (don't try that with a receboard).

Probably not for everyone. I have a KonaOne and and a Windsurfer. I'm also heavy at 220#. I find the Windsurfer has really low volume and is also very tippy. I am certain I'm faster on the Kona. I fully agree for lightweights however, especially in very light winds. But I guess the Windsurfer cannot be railed upwind, so the Kona could be faster in some displacement conditions too.
