When I quit windsurfing, the formula craze was in full swing. And the idea there was that you could plane in low winds with big sails.
So my next question is what is the difference between formula planing and longboard planing? Can you do both in the same conditions? Is longboard planing easier to get to at lower wind speeds and with smaller sails than formula? |

Formula boards are for racing upwind & downwind. They are difficult to control on a regular beam reach. A good longboard will plane nearly as quickly (maybe quicker?) than a formula board, are great fun on a beam reach, and much more versatile. There's no way you could ride a wave on a true formula board! _________________ Spennie the Wind Junkie

spennie, it can be done, i've sailed off of ponce inlet, 11.0 and a FW board, way off the wind, yet still backside on some 8-10 footers. scared the living daylights out of me, but the ride was smooth, and i was headed for the boating channel, not shallow water as in a typical beach or reef break. haven't had any smoother ride on a wave with that much wind ever since. more than likely a twice or thrice in a life time experience. _________________ www.aerotechsails.com

I have raced and sailed both longboards and formula. Formula is great for reaching with little difficulty regarding control. Formula racers rig very big for upwind, downwind sailing. If they had to reach on the big stuff, it would be very difficult. If you rig an 11.0 for racing, rig a 9.2 or 8.4 for recreational reaching/sailing. Formula will plane quicker than any longboard, but they aren't much fun to slog. |

well after this discussion, went to the local swap meet and walked out with used kona one and a used formula board. A Starboard Junior Formula 136. I couldn't pass that up at $199 with fin. I hadn't expected to buy anything.
So I will start with the kona one and then maybe down the road after getting some more experience with the 180 GO I will try the formula board. |
