Since your example was inventing the Internet... thank you for paying your taxes for that.

In light of Dan's post, I thought that I would comment about a sizable payment that I just made. The owners of the private gated property that I live in decided that all the roads needed to be ground down and re-paved, and I have to admit that many areas really needed it. The cost for the effort was divided equally amongst all the homes on the property. The cost was determined to be $2,637.50 per home. You could pay all at once, or you had the choice of a few other options where you paid monthly over time. If you chose any of the delayed payment options, you had to pay interest. The rates weren't unreasonable, but you obviously had to pay more. Overall though, you didn't have a choice whether or not to pay for the road work.
Just imagine if all of us were responsible to pony up on demand for each project done at the city, state and national levels. |

The country of Belize and most of the third world, operate just like gated streets of Chandler and Dans conservative paradise.
Taxes are very low for most folks, but you get very little as well.
If you want infrastructure you pay for it yourself completely. |

You must admit though that the cost would have tripled if the government were involved. My 3 neighbors and I just paved a street. It cost us more than Chandler's quote, but far less if we'd asked the city to do it. |

Does your city give bids for private projects? That sounds a little odd. Did you get a bid from your city? |

My experience has been different.
It cost me a lot more to make the street than the Belize Gov. can do it.
Our past taxes paid for a big pile of equipment they bring to do roads quickly and efficiently .
Private like me has to do it the hard way by hand at high cost.
This the benefit of joining our taxes in a collective effort. The US government does a lot of things badly, but the infra in this country is perhaps their greatest success. |

You live in a segregated community? What next, school vouchers?
That seems cheap, my driveway was $3K for 25ft X 50ft. You made sure they would be using a union contractor who is following all the regulations, right? You wouldn't want to pay too little and not spread that wealth around and possibly take advantage of illegals now would you? |
