How do "honorable" and "a politician who publicly advocates using the IRS as a weapon against something like half the nation" belong in the same sentence? I am not exaggerating when I compare that to the oppressive tactics of Hitler and Stalin ... short of death camps, of course.

Has anyone ever seen a lower, more dangerous, idea from any mainstream American politician?

http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2013/09/18/irs-tea-party_n_3949961.html

So far, congressional investigators have shown that IRS supervisors in Washington knew that applications by tea party groups were being delayed for months and even years. However, investigators have not publicly produced evidence that anyone outside the IRS ordered the targeting or knew it was happening.

The IRS has also released documents suggesting that progressive groups may have been targeted, too. House Republican investigators have been working to show that while some liberal groups were treated poorly, conservative groups were treated worse.

"Unfortunately, my friends on the other side of the aisle continue to frame this issue as a partisan one – as only affecting conservative groups," said Rep. John Lewis of Georgia, the top Democrat on the Ways and Means subcommittee. "Time and time again the facts have shown that both Republican-leaning and Democratic-leaning groups were singled out during the application process."

As part of their investigation, Ways and Means Committee staff have interviewed 25 IRS officials and are reviewing about 300,000 internal IRS documents, Boustany said.

Also Wednesday, the Republican staff of the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee issued a 19-page update of its investigation. Much of the memo detailed how Democratic politicians, including Obama, were publicly vilifying conservative political groups at the same time that IRS agents were targeting them.

The memo included excerpts of interviews with IRS workers who said they were aware of the publicity surrounding some of the groups.

Rep. Elijah Cummings of Maryland, the top Democrat on the Oversight committee, dismissed the memo.

"Unable to prove a link between the White House and the IRS conduct, Republicans now allege that President Obama and other Democrats sent subliminal messages through the media directing the IRS to target tea party organizations," Cummings said in a statement. "This latest partisan staff memo demonstrates that Republicans are grasping at straws. It's time for the committee to stop the political games and start working to restore the public's confidence in the IRS."

Yes. Lying to the American people--to the world, in fact--about "weapons of mass destruction" as a fabricated reason to engage in an unprovoked war, attack Iraq, and kill hundreds of thousands of defenseless and innocent human beings for absolutely NO reason. Cheney and Bush were no better than Hitler. Speaking of "death camps," how long will we incarcerate men, some innocent, at Gitmo?

It's like a trip down the rabbit hole into Wonderland. Isobars and Bard hear some paranoid attack on Obama in paranoid radio-land, and start ranting here about dishonor and abuse. Nobody who doesn't listen to conservative radio land has any idea what they are talking about. A few weeks or months later, it turns out they are wrong. Or have we all forgotten the lies about DDT posted here and agreed with by all who live in conservative radio-land?

Truth? Research? Integrity?

A Libertarian might think that he should be free to mess his own life up. However Conservatives and Christians have never said they sinned less than the average Joe. That is why, as they say, Jesus saves! They wouldn't need religion if they were perfect.

But it is good to have a goal that is high, even if you like to party on Friday night. Laughing

Possesion of cocaine a misdemeanor? I thought it was a felony. Had he been any average Joe he'd be doing time. No?

Got a lot in common with Rush too!

Iso sez all pot heads will amount to nothing. Iso also sez "the vast majority" of drug addicts start with pot.

So either the Congressman was a pot head who turned to coke who was elected to Congress (thereby amounting to something), or he went straight from booze to coke (thereby bypassing pot). I either case, the good Congressman proves Iso wrong.

I have to say, after reading Bard's and isobars' posts, I started wondering, what's this all about. In the Washington Post, CCN and the NY Times I could find nothing obvious in lead stories being reported on. mac's right, this is the kind of stuff one finds on Fox News, talk radio or some goofy internet site.

Regarding what Senator Schumer allegedly advocated, I think the President Obama and his administration should use his executive power to the max in his last three years in office. Remember what Senator McConnell said five years ago. Nothing has changed in the Republican party. No doubt, it's time to use the power you have to push for important goals. Let's judge the focus and goals that the Obama Administration will promote. I'm sure that we will find out more about that tomorrow night in the State of the Union address. Also, regarding the NSA's efforts, Republicans should remember how the Bush/Cheney Administration used their executive power. All we have to do is think back at the legal decisions made to justify spying, waterboarding and other torture practices to get a clear picture of the Hitleresque policies used in the "War on Terror".

With respect to the issue of readdressing the IRS' review of tea party organizations and the issue of tax-free non-profit status, I think that it's time well spent. Giving political organizations tax-free status is absolutely nuts, and that should apply to liberal left oriented political organizations too. Really, when it come down to it, I think that Congress should be overturn the Supreme Court's Citizen's United decision. Arguably the worst decision ever made by a Supreme Court. Adding unlimited secret money to our elections is an unconscionable act that deserves to be struck down.

WHAT? Rush got addicted to pain killers taken to alleviate horrible, chronic back pain, not to whoopie drugs. I took the same pain killers he did, and got no kicks out of them whatsoever. They dulled my post-surgery pain; that's it. I healed enough within a week to dump the drugs, and had zero incentive to keep them up. His back pain never stopped. What the hell does that have to do with recreational drugs that only blithering fools play Russian roulette with?

My GOD but some people just can't STAND that someone with different beliefs and values should be allowed to breathe the same air, let alone speak (or, apparently, post) publicly. Rush is (or is playing on TV and radio the part of) a conservative. Get over it. It's a free country, and the worst thing I've ever heard of him ACTUALLY* saying was his senseless and irrelevant blast of Hillary's looks.

* The rest, such as Limbaugh's factual Donovan McNabb football analysis remarks BSNBC (and, of course, mac) falsely says were racist, Limbaugh's accurate assessment of that SELF-ADMITTED 3-Flucks-a-day-with-multiple-partners slut (look it up in the dictionary), and his earnest and patriotic hope that Obama will fail to achieve his devastating far left agenda, were dishonestly represented by the left wing media.

Infinitely worse, IMO, is a person with actual power openly willing to abuse that power, in violation of the letter and spirit of the Constitution, for political gain. That most certainly includes anyone who is
1) setting up and using the EPA to circumvent the Congress and the public to force unproven and budget-busting environmental ideology upon the nation,
2) forcing socialist (again, look it up) wealth redistribution down our throats despite repeatedly admitting that it will harm the economy,
3) trying his damnedest to silence Fox News and Limbaugh as though the biggest bully pulpit on the planet isn’t loud enough for him to get his message out,
4) provably lying about the ACA to sell it to gullible congressmen and suckers, and
5 through 200) Benghazi, F&F, IRS targeting, and 192 other lies of omission and commission.

Worse on a personal basis is citizens wise-cracking about, rather than being outraged by, those 200 crimes, misdemeanors, lies, violations of the oath of office, and just plain F-U’s. Worse on a leadership level is a man occupying an office that once was and still should be the most powerful, respected, and influential office in the world but which he has clearly weakened very dramatically world wide, and who blames it on a single entertainer, a cable TV network with MANY liberal on-air hosts, and one cable TV host who constantly bends over backwards* to a laughable extent to defend that leader and who ripped the Dubya administration new ones for years.

* Anyone who doesn’t believe that has no clue what O’Reilly ACTUALLY says on the air.
