I missed this until someone sent it to me as an attachment, expressing concerns about Hillary and the ongoing war. Robert F. Kennedy Jr. discusses the history of US involvement in the Middle East, usually in support of oil, and how it has created blow back against the US. Much of this history I knew from reding Seymour Hersh's articles, and Legacy of Ashes, but his basic thesis here is that much of the current unrest is a battle over the location of a pipeline, first proposed in 2000, when Qatar proposed a $10 billion, 1500 kilometer pipeline to deliver natural gas from the South Pars/North Dome gas field. That would mean that Qatar would not have to liquify its gas, and could more readily reach European markets. That would reduce Russia's influence and leverage in Eastern Europe. Russia, threatened immensely by this, backed an alternative running from the Iran side of the gas field, through Syria, and Assad, in 2009, refused to sign the agreement because it threatened their Russian ally. Kennedy points to WikiLeaks documents showing that after Assad refused to back the Qatar route, the CIA began funding opposition groups in Syria.

The right, and particularly the oilies, blame Obama for not addressing the humanitarian disaster of the Syrian civil war. In fact, the issue is substantially more complicated, and the oil industry, as it has for decades, is on the side of CIA intervention through violence. Interesting read, for those who do.

Kennedy also cites this Rand report: http://www.rand.org/content/dam/rand/pubs/monographs/2008/RAND_MG738.pdf

which, like Huntington's seminal work, notes the underlying conflicts.

Wars have nearly always been fought over competing interests in territory and resources. No different here.

Best to allow Trump to negotiate with Putin like we did during WW2.

Never enough time to read the sources, or think about them--but a pat answer. Sigh.
