these people think human urine will attract sharks

http://www.surftravelcompany.com/PEEING-IN-WATER.htm
WHILE :

National Geographic say it has NO effect:

Unfortunately, no; peeing in the presence of a shark will bring no additional protection at all. In an experiment conducted by the National Geographic’s Shark Experiment Live team urine was not proven to be a repellent against shark attacks. In the experiment a male and female diver of equal size in the same wetsuit dove into Great White shark-infested waters while keeping their distance. One diver had a bottle of human urine, which he slowly opened, and let the urine seep into the water. The great white did not react to the presence of the urine in the water in any way. However, scent detection is highly important to these sharks for eight-teen percent of its brain is made up of its olfactory bulbs.

Maui's leading shark authority told me that the best way to keep sharks away from you is take a dump in the water. He told me this while he was picking recyclables out of the Kanaha trash receptacles in the park, something he does for the good of the community when he is not passing out shark advice. His advice is next time you are out past the outer reef, blow a jibe and are waiting for a puff to water start, don't chance a bad encounter with Mr Sharky, just take a dump. The advice seemed, well, odd, but who am I to doubt Maui's leading shark authority?

I don't recall the man's name. I Googled him up several years ago, phoned him, and asked him about it. Googling the question provided answers all over the map, including contradicting statements from Wiki. It's a question I'd pursue further if I spent more time there.

I think hundreds of sailors taking dumps at Kanaha would take care of the problem anyway.....it might also clear up the "swimming beach" controversy. Wink

Great book

Sorry dont have answers to your questions.

I don't think shark behavior is consistent with what we hear they do or dont do.

The kiter was dragging in from far out.
In the 2nd article he was concerned that they only closed the beach for one day while they searched the coast with a helicopter.
His advice was a bit muddled, but he thought we should all stay out of the water, seemingly all over the world.
My advice to him is that there are tens of thousands of sharks out there, and tens of millions of visits to the sea each year worldwide.
That includes more than a million each year in Hawaii alone.
He is far more likely to get hurt in a car on the way to the beach.
The bite on his leg resembles a dog bite, so he will have a lifetime of pub stories to tell.
