On Monday, Pat Briney, long time Hatchery and Stevenson windsurfer was killed by a shark in Maui this week. Pat was staying with Hatch regular Mike B. for the month of December. Faced with another windless day Monday Pat went kayak fishing with a Llyod, another Hatch sailor between Maui and the tiny island of Molokini. Pat was dangling his lower leg in the water when a shark suddenly grabbed his leg.
Lloyd, who was about trolling about 500 yards away heard Pat call out. He paddled to Pat and found that he appeared to have bled out from a shark bite on his right leg.
Lloyd applied a tourniquet and then sought help but it took him about ½ hour to peddle both kayaks about a mile to a distant chartered snorkeling tour boat. That boat took Pat to a boat ramp ashore. Pat died well before reaching shore.
Mike B. says that Pat was a great athlete with a passion for windsurfing and fishing. He and his wife had just finished building their retirement house overlooking the Stevenson launch sites. Pat will be sorely missed on the water but will sail forever in the hearts of his loved ones and many friends!
Life is precious and we only get one chance at it! Do it right!
