Should the bottom of the surfboard be polished with sand-paper in order to prepare it for windsurfing? What is the preferable granulosity of the sand-paper to be used?
I use the serf-board on rivers, and usually it's bottom part turns green-colored after two months of riding.
Thanks. |

different thoughts on this, since a whale or sharks skin is rough , they don't seem to have any problems.
I sand when necessary, to feather out nicks, and when I re paint.
I end with a very fine finish, called mirror , its probably 1000, that is ONE THOUSAND grit.
I would not use more course than 400 to just smooth out, an option would be a pad, mine are green squares.
and wet sandpaper with water. This will remove the green without doing any damage to the finish, but that could be removed with a environmentally friendly cleaner and very lite abrasion pad.
If you have not done this type sanding before, be very cautions you dont remove too much coating, but the top layer will be paint _________________ K4 fins

I don't know about green stuff on a board, but I've had boards that turn tan or brown after several days use in the bay I sail in often.
That brownish color was easily removed by cutting a lemon in half and then rubbing the cut side on the board. (remove seeds/pits from lemon before doing as the board can get scratched). douse with fresh water and the board should be nice and clean.
I would be interested to know if this method would remove the green stuff you mentioned.
have fun!! |

Unless you're putting the finishing touches on a repair or you're racing in the PWA, you're probably wasting your time sanding your board. There won't be any perceptible difference in performance.
