I've been following the shark attacks on Maui and I remember reading something recently about a couple guys developing color schemes and graphics to dissuade sharks from attacking. From what I remember, they were using color patterns and graphics which looked like the surface of the water when viewed from below.

This got me thinking...... say you painted your board with graphics resembling that of a killer whale when viewed from below. Killer whales attach sharks so it might follow that sharks would quickly leave an area they perceive to be "killer whale" territory should they see a board painted to resemble a killer whale. Any thoughts?

while no marine biologist

I am certain that all studies done indicate sharks are color blind.

http://news.nationalgeographic.com/news/2011/01/110119-sharks-color-blind-eyes-rods-cones-australia-animals-science/

so color , should not effect the likely hood of an attack. Pattern may , cause it it looks like the surface ...

I would think , note the first sentence, that the shark should be able to tell that the object while painted to appear like a Killer Whale, isnt really, cause its only 7 feet long.

maybe a 7foot long something else would .. umm umm

However...we had to "tag" a bunch of boards and ended up spraying this all over them:

I have three kids who surf, and I figure what the hell. can't hurt....confuse the giant beasts at least.....my guess would be two big straight black and white lines best...no guarantees!

No, but to my knowledge, no one has ever been bitten by a shark who has "Jesus Loves You" written on their board Wink
