Just curious, were they renting new Fanatic Freewaves as was reported last year? If so, what are your impressions of them? |

they do indeed have some new fanatic freewaves. they also had some from the previous year. i love them, but i also think they have become ubiquitous in the past few years. or maybe it's just where i sail.
to me, they epitomize the "new" shape of boards. quick(er) to plane, still pretty carvy and can be a touch loose, too.
ii have two of them now, but mine are quite a few years older. i'm thinking about upgrading sometime soon. i will say, however, that if i do upgrade i definitely will be getting the version with the tri-fin. i've sailed that in waves and swell and it's waaaaay more fun than a single fin. |

Just got back from 8 days in LaVentana (Mexico), which was pretty kick ass. Sailed 5 out of 8 days. _________________ Kansas City |

I went to Arenal many years back. The comparison to Rowena seems about right. Never went back; I thought it was not sunny enough and a little too choppy to warrant traveling that far for a winter get-away.
Is the Bar Equus still around there? It is a pretty cool place. My wife and I broke in the millennium new year in that bar. It consists of several dance areas and places to hang out, all built into the jungle with great artistry using river rock. It was a wild scene, and I am not really a bar person. |

THANK you for reinforcing my impression of Arenal, as I ask myself about once a year whether I should just go. I don't need sunshine, but I DO need organized swell or clean waves to warrant serious travel. I haven't sailed Rowena in probably in 20 years largely because that photo above reminds me of it. |

Beautiful spot/country but challenging... more Bump and Bump than organized chop for sure... Look at the set up : wind picks up from ~mid lake and blasts towards the end of the lake where the chop has nowhere to go but back at ya after bouncing off the steep shoreline... Bathtub effect... Takes time to adjust to Arenal... |

That's what the pictures look like. We used to blast across an onshore-wind "bounceback" zone in front of a concrete dam abutment just for laughs ... once or twice a day. It felt like the rubble from a collapsed cinder block building. |
