I have to say that backwind is only better if it is a short space, like the Eddie section on a flood in rio, or the Palo Alto channel. Too many tacks in a short distance is not as efficient as back winding , over a longer distance I think tacking is still better. Second it is possible to plane through a tack if the board is going down hill, off shore wind and on shore waves! I can get to the new side on a full plane on 75 liters and I am 200 lbs. It takes practice, learning to go early to the new side, and falling Towards your back winded sail to finish through the eye of the wind.
