Please spread the word. I salvaged a complete rig that washed into Kahului Harbor last night, March 16, at about 5:15pm. It was a gray board and an orange sail. I'm guessing somebody got separated from their rig with the large surf. I reported to 911 and spoke to the cop.

Any way, I'd like to get the gear back to the owner ASAP. Please share this post in any appropriate spots or let me know whom to contact. My email is listed on the web page: http://www.sugarranchmaui.com.

Incidentally, about 6 years ago, a similar thing happened to me. I launched at Sugar Cove with Kevin Pritchard and Vitorio on large north swell day. I got separated from gear trying to get out in the channel, which really didn't exist on a large north day.

Unfortunately, I never found my gear.

I think these high energy north swell days are especially dangerous.

Please share and help me get the gear back to the poor dude that had a long swim in last night.

Thanks,

Justin

From Margie Lovell : The guy was windsurfing @pier one, lost his gear and called the coast guard with his cell phone! The lifeguards brought him in. The sail was a 5.7 Naish (l think). His name is Martin and drives a ford mini van. He has a car rental business.

If anybody can tell this guy, I'd appreciate him picking up the gear ASAP, as it's in the back of my truck in Sprecks!

Thanks,

Justin

You're a good man, Justin. Most importantly great to hear that the dude is safe (nice technique he had calling the coast guard on his cellphone while stuck offshore in the waves).

Now he will be stoked to get his stuff back, too.

Martin, an Austrian, contacted me and got his gear yesterday. He was stoked that the only damage was a blown panel in his sail.

He made the smart move of carrying a cell phone while sailing alone, and when he lost his gear around 3:45pm, the Kanaha jet ski picked him up. Given the high energy of the north swell, it would have been a rough experience finding a safe place to swim to shore, as the area where Martin was sailing is all knarly breakwall downwind of Kanaha.

Justin:

That is one sick looking ranch. Did you have it built?

Let's just say a lot of trips to Home Depot and Lowes, 10,000 little decisions, and a lot of sweat.

This is my real line of work: http://www.railsonmaui.com. I'm also on twitter as @railsonmaui.

I build web applications like this website.

Aloha,

Justin

Sweet

Looks like you have set yourself up for a good lifestyle.

Don't know nothing about rails, but I wish i could use words like "tmuxinator" in my job.

Nice job on the rig salvage!

I was out on that day doing the hula in mast high sets. I almost lost my rig too. Glad to know there are honest folks out there watching out for the other guy! I'm surprised the LG's weren't on it right away. I was pumping onto a large wave when the jet ski pulled up on me to check. Where were they?
