I just picked up a Mark Bassett sailboard used and it does not have straps. I would like to contact Mark to confirm that I can use standard strap screws in the inserts this board has without causing damage. Does anyone know how to get in touch with Mark? Or, if you have any experience with Mark Bassett sailboards I have posted photos at following http://www.evernote.com/shard/s15/sh/9930fae5-cea2-4bf3-85b6-00941411fff7/01f25159cafe20e5d82d2886af2ad5f3

You should be able to check screw size yourself.... Just measure the depth of the holes with something (nail, small allen wrench, toothpick.... whatever), and make sure that you buy footstrap screws that are the same length (or slightly shorter) than the depth of the hole. The thickness of the footstraps will keep the screws from punching through the inserts and into the core of the board. Screw width will vary depending on how worn the inserts are. #10 stainless steel pan head screws are a good start... but if the inserts are really worn #12 may be the way to go.

Thanks very much for the tip / instructions. I was as worried about the width as much as the depth since the inserts appear small in diameter. In your opinion the width is not as critical as depth as long as I don't have too much trouble getting it to screw in (i.e. snap off the srew head), correct?

Just look into the insert hole to verify that machine screws are not needed, so you can just buy #10 stainless sheet metal screws.
Some boards, like Seatrends and old Kinetics, used a brass insert with 10x32 machine screws, like a bolt would have, not sheet metal threads.

Using too wide a screw, you may run the risk of craking the insert... but you would have to REALLY be forcing the screw in there for the insert to crack. The much greater risk is with a screw that it too long. If the insert holes look small, start with a #10 screw. A little plastic bag of SS sheet metal screws is less than $2 at Home Depot.... you won't be out a whole lot of cash if you buy the wrong size.

Also, Zirtab is right... Some old boards do use machine screws for footstraps. Thats something good to check on before you head to the store...

Thanks to both for the help. It is not the metal insert type. I am ordering straps online today and will add a set of #10 and #12 to the order after I determine depth. Thanks again.

Make sure to use the correct screwdriver (big fat phillips) not a cordless electric drill with a bit.

.....unless you've been a carpenter for 35 years and know when to let go of the trigger!

For what it is worth, Mark Bassett stopped making boards around 2001, and he became a minister, I think in the Colorado Springs area, but not sure. As far as I know, he hasn't windsurfed since then.

if you hard soap the screws you have much less chance of stripping the insert or snapping off the head.
