Wednesday, April 16, 2014, Clinton Lake, Lawrence, KS: Sunny, high of 68°F, CRANKING south wind 30-40 mph, huge lake swell.....I'm the only one out sailing. Not even any kiters! I know it's a workday and the water's still cold (55°F), but it was awesome!!! 20 years ago, there'd a been 5-10 guys out there, even on a weekday. Crying or Very sad

Well on Tuesday at Coast Guard Beach on Cape Cod we had four windsurfers and one kiter. The bad news is I think I was the youngest guy at 47!
I started windsurfing at 18 years old all on my own no family members windsurfed.
It is just sad. The youths today. Rolling Eyes

should we make a list of why windsurfing has become less popular?

culture has a large portion of it.

the fashion of planing only, and super small gear that needs tons of wind plays a big part. straight from maui and the gorge culture.

economics is part too.

the middle class is getting squeezed. there are less of us, and we are all having to work longer hours.

please add your thoughts.

global warming
democrats
Oahu-centric surf culture
Billabong
all the old gear that still is out there
all the new expensive stuff
republicans
al queerda
google glasses
football fins
kiters
sharks
hi-def tv
leashes
Go-Pros
RedBull and 5 hour energy drinks

I believe that all of these things contribute to why there are not more people on the water. I miss the 80's

You forgot....
Requires getting off the couch
Requires some thinking on your own
Requires money
Requires a vehicle
Requires a spine
Requires being outdoors most of the time.....

to me, it seems there are less young people (and people in general) being active. most kids I know (I'm a teacher) have their faces in their phone screens over half the time if left to their own devices (not in my class!!). Seems everyone else does also.

Kiting
Lack of good wind, in most areas of the country.
Too many distractions.
Yep, everywhere I travel to, it's an old geezer sport, myself included.
