Quick and dirty video on how to connect a Maui Sails Boom to an RDM mast... sorry about the poor production value/bad light

My problem with the streamlined heads is they break. I've broken a lot of them, maybe 5 or so, causing some loooong swims. Always the same place too- right next to where the clip goes on.

The Maui ones look better, but I hear some people say they slip.

Well, so does every boom head including the streamlined.

At first my Maui head slipped because I wasn't sure how much force to apply. Now it never slips and still doesn't require much force. I basically close the lever to where the lever and the boom head lines up than yank the line tight and cleat it. Clamp and tada!

Yeah, it's hard to tell sometimes w the Streamlined also, I have crushed at least 2 masts by overclamping ...

I've not had any problems w/ the Maui Sails head slipping at all. In fact, I think it's one of the best heads out there for not slipping. There's so much contact area b/w the mast and the shim, and the shim and the boom head, that the thing just stays put, even when landing big jumps.

curious... did you crush SDM or RDM masts? I've heard of a couple people breaking the Streamlined boom head but not many. How long did they last for you?

SDMs. 100%. My own fault in both cases, I just over-cranked it (although it's easy to do, because you don't want them slipping either)

I do think they probably have a design flaw though in the area where the boom heads have broken on me, but I did have them for a while, and sailed them in salt water, so there was some corrosion.

I like the idea of the plastic Maui Sails ones, seems like this is a better concept.

here's what the new Streamlined head looks like in action... definitely easier to adjust than the old strap-on boom

I used one on an HSM boom with an SDM mast; it eliminated slippage. They are noticeably heavier, though.

all I have to do is muster the biggest, most powerful YANK of the day, slamming the mast against my abs, to force the cuff off the shim. It takes only 2 or 3 tries, and makes a lot of noise as the whole sail reacts.

Looks like the hardest part was just unclamping the lever?
