To get this thread back on track I will share my memory of learning the jibe via rec.windsurfing.

It was a poetic verse by an unknown author (to me) back in the 80’s ………..

”Throw, Throw, Grab and GO!”

Even though this mantra ruined my progression …… back in the day it helped me to jibe. I actually bought a helmet to absorb the mast bouncing off my head during my “learning” sessions. Those were the days!

Anyone willing to claim that mantra?

I could retype the explanation here, or you could Google and read the tutorial on Mike Fick's jibe tips. It's windy. Smile

Remember, this was back in the day when rec.windsurfing was nearly all that was available for instruction and tips, good and bad.

The first throw was with the clew hand, the second throw was with the mast hand.

Reviewing my early jibe progression I believe the first throw, if performed too hard, was causing the mast to bounce off my head (the reason for the helmet purchase). With trial and error I eventually learned not to throw it too hard.

During a Wyatt Miller clinic years later I mentioned how the mantra helped me learn the jibe. His reaction was..."Dude! If you throw the clew hand you will back wind the sail. Only throw the mast hand from shoulder to shoulder".

Now it all makes sense! I wish Wyatt had been around to help out back in those days but he wasn't even a thought in anyone's mind.

Boy, writing this sure makes me feel old. Gotta go windsurfing to feel young again!

Very Happy

It's all in the timing. At the right time, it's both effortless and virtually instantaneous.

Seems like the first throw was more of a push

"you THROW the back of the boom away like a hot
shot-putt. A millisecond later -- way before you complete
that first THROW -- you THROW the front of the boom way
across your face"

Makes more conceptual sense now.

I missed the whole rec.windsurfing thing. what era are we talking? Mid nineties? earlier?

Definitely a push. The "hot shot-put" analogy is accurate. The bigger the sail, the harder one has to push to spin the sail rapidly.

rec.w was going full tilt when I left it in 2005, after many years. It was unmoderated, so was much like this website's political forums. Several, maybe many, of its denizens are here now.
