|
|
Yesterday I sailed The Wall and rode some very good waves between the marker and the boat launch east of the marker. The best waves--including a couple monsters--occurred from 4pm to 6pm. At 7pm it had turned to small waves and chop.
Based on the readings below, it seems that: the wind on the sensor must be averaging above 30 mph, gusts to 50 are helpful; a John Day outflow of ~250 KCFS produces good waves; the tailwater level of 162 ft may be important.
(Yesterday's data: http://www.nwd-wc.usace.army.mil/ftppub/project_data/hourly/jda_1daysback.txt)
I don't know much about the tailwater level readings, but river depth should also be important along with KCFS, other opinions welcome.

25 years sailing in the wall corridor.....
over 350k - forget about it.
~300k - unless it's blowing a steady 30+ - user satisfaction will vary.
250 - 300k - requires 25 - 30 at least. smooth wind, smooth swell. choppy wind, choppy swell.
under 250K - swell should be goos - epic depending on wind speed and quality of wind. smooth wind, smooth swell. choppy wind, choppy swell.
wait - i see a formula. divide the cfs flow by 10,000 to get the optimal wind speed at which you'll have good swell and somehow factor in the difference between low and high gusts.
Eric - we need a mathematician.

Add CFS Flow rate + wind speed, but the BEST swell at the The Wall also factors in the wind direction...
Using the Wall Marker sensor, what's the ideal wind direction (compass bearing), that you want to see at The Wall before making the drive?

Getting skunked is good for the soul, makes you appreciate the good days. Play golf if you want to save gas.
30+ W, SW, SSW at wall will be better than most places on the planet at any given time to sail.

use the force, if it is not epic.do not sail. put your toes in the water and reflect on how your life sucks.
