Robbery ... burglary ... theft ... looting ... somebody took his shyt. Feeling compelled to lock the doors, set the alarms, kick the rottweiler, and rig a Claymore mine to protect our property from scum is no way to have to live. We've seen or heard here about thefts, burglaries, strongarm robberies, bullets fired through outhouses, life-threatening assaults on land and water, etc. at Gorge launches for decades, and the cops are too far away to do anything but take copious notes when they finally arrive. It's up to us to be more observant (e.g., associate faces to the vehicles and gear around you), be more confrontational (e.g., "Convince me this vehicle or sail belongs to you"), more protective (e.g., enlist backup if necessary), more proactive (e.g., take videos or pictures, get license plate numbers), and get involved if you have useful information (e.g., be a witness, and file and sign a complaint when someone assaults or robs you).

Whether it's ISIS, Bernie Madoff, or some local meth-head, complacency and tolerance breed contempt, and Big Government is not the only legal, smart, effective solution.

A couple years ago I tried to get in a rain session in late fall. Noone else was in the lot or the rest of the park for that matter- the campground was closed Being the only one there no way I was going to leave my car full of gear unattended, so I parked so I could see it from the water. After rigging and finally getting planing I looked at shore and saw rangers walking down the path. They said I was parked in a no parking zone and had to move the car.
