I am thinking to get on or DIY one.

I found 3 companies who make them
http://www.k4fins.com/2012/07/k4-harness-mount/
http://backy-mount.com/
http://www.sailvideosystem.com/p/3rdpv-kite-windsurf-pro-version-166683
I think I can make one myself with RAM mounts components:
http://www.rammount.com/

But now the question is... Is it save to go windsurfing with a rod sticking out of your back?!
What about crashes, swimming, waterstarts etc.?

The only warning I have found is on Backy's website
Quote:
Before use, read the mounting instructions! We shell not be held responsible for any injuries resulting from the use of our Backy Mount nor shell we be held responsible for any sustained damage as of your equipment when using our Backy-mount. Never use it in extreme environment or dangerous situations, or do so at your own risk. We are not responsible for any injury or damage threof.

Personally I think of GoPro cameras as disposable cameras. After all you are taking them places which you really have limited control on how well they stay attached. I have an older GoPro and a GoPro 3 Black. I have "floaty backs" on both of them. Unfortunately the newer GoPro's suck through batteries, so an extended battery would be nice, but then you can't have the "floaty back" on it. That being said, I have taken them windsurfing on a boom mount, helmet mount, and a clew View. Also I have taken them whitewater kayaking on a helmet mount and a boat mount. So far no mount has failed. But that doesn't mean it will at some time. Many recommend a "tether attachment", but unfortunately GoPro hasn't seem fit to mold that attachment into their camera case....

Yeah, the back mount looks pretty cool for sure! I'd guess that the chances of poking a hole in your sail or maybe whacking yourself in the back of the head somehow might be worth considering? JP and Robby Naish have put some pretty cool pics up recently of wavesailing with a back mounted GoPro. Check their facebook pages, awesome stuff!

Hi John- there is a gap in the case near the middle of the hinge which serves as a spot to attach a tether. I find it easiest to detach the back door of the housing, loop the tether around the hinge, and then put the backdoor back on the housing. It is a pretty small gap, so an old piece of kite line or the GoPro supplied tether strings work best.

Regarding batteries: they did upgrade the battery when they released the 3+ cameras. Spare/new batteries that work in the 3 or the 3+ cost $19.99. The new one is Li-ion, 3.7V, 1180mAh, 4.37Wh versus the 3.7V, 1050mAh, 3.885Wh that was supplied with the 3.

Hope that helps!

Or you could just make one out of an old boom arm as Juban did here.

I can see myself putting one of those on my back....getting catapulted onto my sail, and putting a nice big hole in it.....

Thanks. I like the tether, although I'm not sure where I would attach it on my Kayak mount unless I put another mount on it just to tether. BUT I already changed to Wasabi batteries. 3.7 v, 1200mAh 4.4 Wh. So by specs they are already better than the original batteries. MAYBE they are a little better, but I find the Hero3 sucks through batteries much faster than my Hero. I've had them on side by side and the difference is obvious. And yes, I even have my WiFi turned off to save battery power (not sure why I got it, since it is always off)....
