Yes, always brilliant to dump the kayak and it's paddle to SWIM away from the area thrashing your legs and arms.
Since you swim sooo much faster than paddling the kayak, and your body is sooo much bite proof than the kayak......

Ha! These are two of my friends that I used to ski with at wachusett. They had a gopro on the front that got knocked over in the 'attack'. They have some some divers that are going to look for it. The footage could be pretty cool.

It's not rocket science to right an overturned kayak.
Maybe Michael Phelps may swim away from a shark attack, but nobody else should try, if a kayak and it's paddles are nearby.
It's like a horror movie when the girls get scared by a monster and run away from a working car.

They actually got back in the over turned kayaks. they were full of water but better than just swimming. Shocked I think they were just trying to be quiet and hope the shark would swim away which it did. I think it is hard to say they did the wrong thing when in fact what they did worked. Shark split.

What color were their kayaks? I have been doing an informal, laxadaisical study. So far it seems that almost all kayaks attacked by great whites are Yum-Yum Yellow. But I have seen no pics of the incident with the girls, so I was wondering.....

From the news video, bite mark into the white abs plastic. It showed one shot of a red top half, but not sure if that was the girl whose boat got bit.

Wasn't expecting criticism of the girls ... but hey it's the internet.

Don't say "yum-yum" yellow, bad karma for my non-metallic gold colored paddleboard.

Criticism? Or maybe, lesson for the application of common sense.
Fact, under the surface is danger.
Fact. Getting aboard a swamped kayak put's some plastic between you and the danger.
Fact. Swimming away is flawed thinking, every fish can swim faster than you.

Thanks for laying that out for me Spock.

It was stated above that they did get back into the yaks.
